The Inner Baduy people are Guardians of Tradition who preserved their ancient customs and beliefs for generations. Their rules focus on harmony and simplicity.

1. Forbidden to Foreigners:
* The Inner Baduy’s fiercely guard their sanctuary against external intrusion.
* Only Indonesians can stay for up to three days in the inner villages.
2. Leadership by Pu-un and Jaro:
* Each village has a Pu-un (political and ceremonial leader), assistied by the Jaro who determine planting, harvest periods, treat the ill, and uphold customary law.
3. Cultivating Dry Rice Only:
* Wet rice cultivation is forbidden and water buffalo are neither kept nor consumed.
4. No Fertilizers, No Machines:
* Their agriculture thrives without artificial fertilizers or machinery. Cash crops snd profit-making are taboo.
5. Education Beyond School Walls:
* No formal education. They learn from nature, elders, and ancient texts through wisdom stories under moonlit skies
6. Footwear-Free Existence:
* No Shoes. Their feet touch the earth directly connecting them to the land, grounding their souls.
7. Footsteps on Earth:
* No modern transportation. They traverse distances by walking, connecting to the land they cherish.
8. No Electricity:
* Electricity doesn’t disturb their nights. Stars illuminate their dreams.
9. Trees Are Sacred:
* Trees breathe life into their existence. They protect the forest, knowing it sustains them.
10. No School, No Money:
* Their wealth lies in simplicity. No formal schooling, no currency exchanges.
11. Technology Abstinence:
* No electricity, petroleum oil, radios, TVs, newspapers or internet.
* No plastic and to***co.
* Building materials: wood, bamboo, stone, palm, and leaves. No nails or modern construction materials.

There are two types of Baduy, namely Inner Baduy (orang Tangtu) and Outer Baduy (orang Panamping). The difference between both is the way they follow traditional rules.

Inner Baduy:
The Inner Baduy represent the holy centre of the tribe and also live in its sacred centre formed by the three villages of Cibeo, Cikartawana and Cikeusik (most holy village). Their area takes around 1/3 of the total and they make up to 1/7 of the population. They reject modern conveniences, practice their ancient customs faithfully and live in their own villages with the majority not having any contact with non-Baduy people. These younger generations accompany us to walk from the outer to the inner circle and they all belong to the inner Baduy.

Outer Baduy
The roughly four thousand Outer Baduy people live in around fifty villages around the inner circle forming a protective fence around the holy inner centre. They interact freely with non-Baduy, including with “outsiders” who visit their villages. The strict ascetic lifestyle and rules of the Inner Baduy do not apply anymore on the Outer Baduy.

Our mission has always been to preserve our cultural heritage and being respectful to Mother Nature at the same time. In the same way our „Retro Future“ collection promotes ancient practices to find answers for problems of our modern world.

We already explained the Slobog (Slobok) motif, which means lobok or loose standing as a form to grief and therefore used to mourn for those passed away.

We have two Slobog motifs and the one shown here is a smaller and lighter version with high contrast in navy and white.

The Truntum motif derives from the word tumaruntum which means to grow. Originally from the Surakarta Sunanate (palace)this motif is worn during weddings by the parents of the bride, symbolizing the love of they parents for their children.

On the other hand Slobog, which means lobok or loose stands as a form to grief and therefore the motif is used to mourn for the dead.

This look combines a sleeveless blouse with the Truntum motif and a jog skirt with the Slobog motif.

We went to the Seto inland sea in Japan to visit the art islands of Naoshima and Teshima. There we stayed at the Benesse House and Museum which is a hotel and a museum. Guests can visit the museum after its closed for public until late and the access of all art spaces belonging to the Benesse Art Site are included (we visited Benesse House & Museum, Benesse House & Park, Benesse Valley Gallery).

Beside there are several other art spaces and museums as well as countless outdoor sculpture parks. We went to the Lee Ufan Museum and the Chichu Art Museum both on Naoshima and the Teshima Art Museum on the neighbor island of Teshima.
