Typographic research is an integral parts of heypentype’s new design frameworks. Through this research project I found a new perspective on type design process and opening a wide doors for typeface explorations in the future.

This typographic research also gives me a plenty room for doing critical-thinking, questioning, searching, reading, etc in order to conceptualize a typefaces. A process that was often overlooked in the past in favor of following trends so as not to miss out the momentums. This is a slow process, but I believe it will payoff in the long run.

These research are only exploring, looking for a common pattern beyond forms and shapes in order to find an essence of typographic forms that emerged and widely used in that period of time. Either its shapes, layouts, or typographic treatment. Then analyse and synthesis it before interpret it as a typeface series.

1 May is special day for us: Font Designers, Font Engineers, Font QA workers, and all labor of font industries. In this special days, I've launch a new yet (might be) unpopular licensing system for heypentype fonts distributed on our own channel.

If you have a time, please consider read on our website (link on slide2). I hope the new licensing systems will bring us close into fairness between a font user who extract economical value from our fonts and ours a font industries workers who exchange our time and expertise to produce a fonts.

A lot of unfairness happened in this industries nowadays. But we can create a better place by starting from ourselves with understanding licensing systems, a fair-licensing systems I hope.

🌎 Welcome to Decomotif Typeface Constellations!

The first stop is Decomotif Latte or for short Deco Latte Typeface. Latte is the first interpretations of our typeface research(see previous post). Currently, there are three ongoing interpretations, the two typeface is still on development(probably there's one new interpretations will be added in the future).

The MyFonts Version(MYF) already released. Just head to https://www.myfonts.com/collections/decomotif-latte-font-heypentype to take a look.

But, Heypentype own version still on finishing process. You may ask, are there any different between MYF version and Heypentype(HYPN) version?. Hmm..actually a lot.😉

Lets the voyage begins....
Our first 2024 typeface constellations are using exploratory approach into typedesign. The first steps in this research is to observe the common pattern and characteristic found on data source(see previous post), in this case 15 old posters from 1900 era’s.

Those finding will become our foundation to be interpreted in forms of typedesigning and overall theme of this constellations.

This post only covering few thing from our observation. There’s a lot of thing to describe, but it might be not suitable for this platform. A blog post or in-depth article is more suitable for it.

In a meantime, please enjoy our endeavor when creating a typefaces, because for us and have many functional for both on consumer perspective and cultural perspective.

A Typeface constellations voyages begin with a deep dive into research and analysis. Searching and looking for unseen pattern, beyond what appears in the surface. We gathers 15 posters from 1900 up until 1920 era as starting point in our voyage, the first thing we’ve seen is obvious: A wealth of Art-Deco posters, and a few Art-Noveau style.

This source material from bygone era’s are interesting and worth to studying at. In our view, this era style serve as a bedrock for geometrical, bauhaus, and sans later on. This fifthteen source we used as scope and boundaries to limit our starting point, so we can put more focus on analyzing and interpretating rather than digging up about history.

This source taken from Pinterest, but pardon us we forget to put a link on each material(a little bit fatal for us, sorry). But, if you have info about this poster material. Please comment below.

This font research aim’s to analyze then synthesize type-specimen data into raw materials ready to be interpreted as concrete forms of typeface design. This process kind like a musician trying to listen a few of their favourite songs then figure it out the rhythm, chords, refrain, time signature, beats, etc.

This process is part of a new heypentype design thinking endeavour to create a unique typefaces. This design thinking aspired from Marcus Leis of on design approach in designing a typeface. And this font research using an exploratory approach because this is only approach I can afford now and fully understands. There’s another two other approach: Expressionism, and Experimental as Marcus said.

In this first part, I presented a two from few type-specimen data that I deliberately choose as primary data(of course I picked with reason not just a random😃). This just simple analysis, but I’ve done a deep analysis in this that I can’t share on this platform. Hope you can learn one or two from this simple post.

Take an example data01 from Bauerische Griesserei. There are a lot of thing worth to be noted instead of just 4 point. Also take an example data02 from manuscripts, if you are tempting to create a blackletter/textura revivals, there’s a lot of thing that will excited you from ligatures, alternate, historical forms, etc. But, No. In my view, a revivals doesn’t need research to create it. A revival just like a cover songs from the original artist/musician. So the chords, the progression, lyrics, time signature is there, only need some variations using another instrument/genre to create it.

From this analysis data we can make a conclusion to bring into next phase as raw material. The other data I’ll post next time. In meantime, have a nice day.

We’d like to see how this two typeface(work in progress) based on exploratory research on textura/blackletter from various type specimens (details later) performed on long bodytext like an article. The weight is same, a regular. We don’t set the font size, leading, letterspacing, etc. All those setting provided by Noema Magazine web developer as we only replace their original typeface with our own. In this proof test we’ve used variable fonts, so we don’t necessarily uploaded few static fonts.

After this done, we’ll working on adding a supporting character for latin scripts. If you have any suggestions on how this proof-test results going, please comment below. Thank you

Thank you 2022. This year we only releasing two Hargloves Sans and Hunkster. Particularly Hargloves , this typeface covered almost all latin script language all over the world.

Years 2023 will be busy working on many different like this one. A bodytext expected to be released on mid 2023 hopefully. The first ideas is designing for tight-spaced long text media, like a columned article on newspapers, blogs, etc.

A long-almost forgotten . This not-a-new fonts will be resumed again with fresh new ideas for bodytext . Still the initial design purpose remain intact, to present a joyful reading for everyone who love to read a long passage of paragraphs.
