I get asked about what I eat every day quite often. This is my diet. When we look at "diet". It needs to give us a few different things: Adequate nutrients (protein, vitamins, and minerals), energy (from the sun, the Earth, movement, fats, and carbohydrates). It also needs to give us love, gratitude, support, and community. Instead of just food, this is how we should look at diet.

Do not believe the hype you read on packaging like 'low fat'; fat-free; plant based. It's all rubbish and does nothing for you. Look at the label and see what they are trying to get you to eat. Mostly sugar and chemicals; even if they say 'no sugar' the carbohydrate content of the product turns to sugar in your body.

Last December, Dorothy's husband, Nodge, was diagnosed with mixed dementia (vascular and Alzheimer’s). Here's what Dorothy from Worthing had to say:

"He constantly lost his keys, wallet and glasses. He asked the same question and told the same stories repeatedly. He couldn’t remember where he lived. He’d even got lost on the way to the toilet in the night. He couldn’t join conversations because he couldn’t follow them. He was unable to drive because he couldn’t think about more than one thing at once. There were lots of signs of dementia.

At the Memory Clinic we had wanted to discuss a prevention programme but instead were given a virtual pat on the head and a pile of depressing leaflets about where to go for support. There was no hint of hope...We had two days of deep depression and hopelessness then decided to take things into our own hands.

We went to the Alzheimer’s prevention charity Food for the Brain and watched a 4 hour ‘masterclass’ by some of the world’s leading prevention professors. It was mind-blowing. Nodge did their free on-line Cognitive Function test, and questionnaire which works out your Dementia Risk Index and tells you what actions to take to reduce your risk. His score was 56% – it should be zero.

Nodge started taking the recommended B vitamin supplements and omega-3 fish oils, radically changed his diet, cutting out all sugar and refined carbs and added two tablespoons of Ketofast (C8 oil) a day. C8 is, a type of fat from coconuts that the body turns into ketones. Ketones are an alternative fuel which brain cells prefer to glucose.

In just three months the change has been remarkable. We both feel better. Our moods are better, our energy is better. Honestly, I feel like I’ve got my husband back. I am so grateful to Food for the Brain."
