This tweak can make a world of difference.

The problem with "what are you making?"

- Close ended question that will typically elicit a one-word response, e.g. "house," "mommy," "dragon," etc.

- Children aren't always making something concrete. Sometimes, many times, they're experimenting with the materials at hand. We focus on a product, they're focusing on a process (of learning).

- Interrupts a child's creative process if they are indeed experimenting. It can also make children feel that they have expectations placed upon their art, and what they're doing isn't "right" or "enough."

The pros of "Tell me about your work!"

- This open-ended phrase allows children to think about and verbalize their thought processes, ideas, and actions - eliciting far more expressive language.

- If a child is indeed making something specific, they can still share that with you, but if they weren't they wont feel "wrong."

- The question of "what are you making?" gives a sense of expectation, while "tell me about your work!" exudes interest and curiosity around what the child is doing.
