A fine line: musings on history, archaeology and the Nine Years War A fine line: musings on history, archaeology and the Nine Years War
OTD in 1594 Captain John Dowdall made his move on Enniskillen Castle after 9 days of siege. Assault boast moved on the castle wall from two sides. Under the cover of supporting fire from English cannon, the largest boat anchored against the wall. Its troops mined a hole in the outer wall using picks and crow bars. The Irish fired buildings within the ward, forcing the English to withdraw. Dowdall's men entered when the flames died down.
The Irish took refuge within the keep, but Dowdall threatened to destroy the castle with gunpowder. The garrison surrendered , apparently on terms, but Dowdall paid little heed as he executed 150-200 occupants including women and children; some by drowning, some by the sword. Captain Thomas Lee later said despite 'Her Majesties word being past to the poor beggars to keep it (the terms of surrender), they were all notwithstanding dishonourably put to the sword in a most miserable state'.
This act would later come back to haunt the English garrison in Enniskillen as it fell to Cormac MacBaron O'Neill in 1595. After capitulating, allegedly on terms, the entire ward was put to the sword. This was odd enough as the Irish generally accepted and accommodated surrendering English garrisons. Perhaps memories were still fresh of Dowdall's action the year before.
OTD 1602 O'Neill finally made it back to Dungannon after the disastrous defeat at Kinsale. Though he had lost c. 1,000 men during the battle and rout (also his reputation and air of invincibility), many drowned trying to cross the R. Blackwater (Co. Cork) and the R. Maigue (Co. Limerick). Worse still the retreating Irish were harried and attacked by erstwhile allies as they made their way north. It was reported that 'they that would kiss them in their going forward did both strip and shoot bullets at the on their return; and for their arms, , they did drown them and tread them down in every bog and soft place under their feet'. The harrowing march north may have cost O'Neill twice as many soldiers as were lost at Kinsale.
Why was anyone surprised when Mountjoy hammered Tyrone at Kinsale? Should have known that the lord deputy had form for ruining Christmas. Precisely one year earlier, Chritmas Eve 1600, Mountjoy attacked an took Phelim O'Byrne's house at Ballinacor, Co. Wicklow. After taking Phelim's son prisoner and killing all those about the house, Mountjoy 'lodged in the house all night, spending upon such provisions as he [Phelim] had made for Christmas, which was a good store of beef, great store of strong drink, and some both of wine and aqua vitae'. The next morning, satiated and no doubt with some hangovers, Mountjoy burned the house to the ground. Aye, Merry Christmas to you too Mountjoy....

How the North was lost: the war that killed off Gaelic rule Review: The Nine Years War: 1593-1603 by James O’Neill
Not sure if this has been on before but sure lets give it a crack again. Here's a short blog by Jim O'Neill on the role of women during the Nine Years War. If the history of the Nine Years Road had been a road less trod (until recently), then the impact and experience of half the population was been for the most part entirely overlooked. There is a much longer directors cut of this, but this will have to do for the time being. https://www.academia.edu/24280717/The_women_of_Tyrones_Rebellion
