He was one of ten children of a small farmer. At the age of 15 he qualified as a telegraphist and then moved to the UK to under go a 3 year course in Civil Service in Kings College London. After becoming bored with his work as a Telegraphist he moved into the organisational aspect the GAA eventually becoming the head of the Cork County Board. He later spoke of the GAA as the backbone of the nation

al movement through it’s quasi military ethos. He was elected a councillor in Cork in 1911. After this he moved to UK but was eventually forced to return home due to strong links to the Fenians. In 1914 and came back to Ireland and opened a to***co shop which is where he helped set up the Hibernian rifles. In 1916 Walsh and 30 other Hibernian riflemen served at the GPO under the command of James Connolly. After the rising he was sentenced to death which was eventually reduced and was sent to Portland and later Lewes prison in the UK. He was released in August 1917 but shortly after was arrested after making a speech in Ballinagh County Cavan and sentenced to 5 years in prison but released after partaking in a hunger strike which led to the eventual death of hunger striker Thomas Ashe. In 1918 he got elected as a TD for Corrk through Sinn Fein and was a member of the First Dàil Eireann. The Tailteann games (GAA version of Olympics) held in 1924, 1928 and 1932 was re-established by Walsh in order to promote tourism and renew connection with Irish immigrants and emphasise the states Irish heritage. More people attended the 1928 games than the actual Olympics. Walsh’s connection to this establishment is through the daughter, Jenny, of the original owner who he married. In 1910 Llyods hotel became Turner’s hotel on Georges St. which is now Oliver Plunkett St. Turners hotel was a IRA truce liaison headquarter in late 1921. Michael Collins was a regular of the hotel making a speech in support of the Anglo Irish treaty. Tom Barry also made it his official headquarters in the city. This establishment has been revitalised as a new venue in the centre of Cork city with live music, food & drink while keeping authentic to its roots with original memorabilia from the time period including rifle used by the Cork division of the Irish revolution.
