Sometimes a child can eat very well but still be low in B6 due to other factors such as stress and anxiety depleting the body of B6. B6 along with Zinc is also needed for the production of Serotonin in the body (our happy hormone).
As we are getting closer to exam season for our teenagers it might be worth looking at supporting them through diet and/or supplementation
Picked these blow pens in tiger yesterday. They make a great oral motor activity. Oral motor skills are necessary for eating and talking. Some children might hold food in the sides of their mouth for hours before swallowing or find it difficult to coordinate chewing and swallowing. Simple blowing tasks could help to strengthen the muscles needed for these activity. Also this is loads of fun!!š
Research has shown that playing in the forest can stimulate the immune system in a positive way and helps to reduce pro-inflammatory proteins. This can lead to a healthier immune system which are better able to deal with infections and viruses.
The alcohol based hand sanitisers can be very harsh on your childās delicate skin. Picked this one up in for my own daughter as she developed a rash on her face from touching her chin after using the one in school. Her preschool was more than happy to use this one on her hands rather than the one they had in the classroom.
Zinc plays a vital role in childrenās development. Low levels in the body has a negative effect on a childās mood and concentration.
A Nutritional consultation can help identify the vitamins and minerals your child may be lacking in which can have a knock on effect on their concentration, attention and behaviour at home and in school.
Getting down on the floor, making eye contact and having back to forth interactions with your baby and toddler open up many opportunities for them to learn and develop.
Research (Gilkerson et al, 2018) has shown that 96% of 18-24 month olds do not get enough of these opportunities.
Book reading is an easy way to engage with your baby and toddler and introduce new words and phrases
Morning sickness or all day sickness is very common during pregnancy. There is so much hormonal changes and metabolic changes taking place to allow normal growth of the baby. Although itās not fully preventable, there are a number of things you can do to help ease morning sickness.
*eat mini meals throughout the day rather than big meals.
*eat a small snack at bedtime and when waking.
*choose healthy meals and snacks where possible as high fat processed meals can aggravate the digestive system more.
*vitamin b6 can help to break down and eliminate excessive pregnancy related hormones.
*ginger has anti nausea effects due to certain compounds in ginger.
*acupressure has been shown to relieve nausea and maybe putting use the travel sickness bands during early pregnancy to relive nausea.
Ear infections are a common childhood illness. When a child has an ear infection speech sounds appear muffled and can be difficult to process.
Reoccurring ear infections can sometimes lead to delayed speech as well as issues with balance and coordination.
With a BEANS program the root cause of the ear infection is investigated, the immune system is supported and a play based developmental program is devised to support the childās overall development.
Numerous studies have shown the benefits for children getting fresh air every day. It improves energy, memory and concentration by inhaling fresh oxygen into their lungs. Fresh air also improves digestion and increases serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is our happy hormone thatās important for improving our mood and reducing anxiety.
As our children are now settled back at school and being exposed to viruses again itās a good idea to ensure their immune systems are supported on a daily bases. Think of adding at least two of these foods to your childās lunchbox. Carrots to boost vitamin A intake, berries for their antioxidant affect or probiotic yoghurt to help our good bacteria. Small simple changes can go a long way.
Parents are supported to use Hanen Strategies in my Child Developmental Home Programs as they provide guidance on how to support your childās language and social development in everyday interactions

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS IN CHILDREN: numerous studies indicate that Omega-3 fatty acids are deficient in children ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia (poor muscle coordination and speech). Abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism may account for many features common in these conditions.
"Reported DHA 23% reduced, total Omega-3 20% reduced, and Omega-6 unchanged in blood plasma levels in children with autism."
Functions of EFA (Omega-3):
- Brain development of the fetus, infant, and young child through life
- Maintenance of normal brain function
- Vital for brain cell signaling
- Prominent structural fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and retinal tissue and is
- Very important for visual processing (deficient in reading disabilities)
Supporting childrenās brain development using good nutrition as core building block along with developmentally appropriate activities and interaction that trigger new neural pathways to be made and enhancing learning.
