Harrington Harps
Harp Maker in Cork City
I finally got some proper photos of the latest design of harp. I've been making this for about a year now, having reduced the size of the soundbox as well as a few other aesthetic and structural tweaks. Very happy with the outcome.
This harp is Walnut, and is currently with it's new owner in West Cork. The next harp on the list is Cherry, for another mighty Cork woman, and when that's done I'll hopefully get some proper photos taken of that as well.
After 11 years in its Scotch Street base, Armagh Pipers Club is relocating its admin office to the city's cultúrlann, Aonach Mhacha, which will also host its Family Sessions and FonnFriday concerts.
The move will help the Club's finances recover from a decade of frozen Arts Council funding, amounting to a vast reduction when inflation is taken into account. This year, we finally secured a small uplift, which although it still leaves us below the value of the 2013 grant, at least allows us to present the 30th William Kennedy Piping Festival in November with a small chance of breaking even.
The logistics of the move to Aonach Mhacha, and a secondary facility in Armagh Business Centre, is a major challenge for our small charity. We would be very grateful for help from students, parents or friends who could help with packing, transporting and unpacking the Club's property, especially between now and the end of August. Please WhatsApp us on 07712 809933 if you can help.
This is class! 😀
The new harp likes getting itself a mention in the press!
If you're in Milltown Malbay for Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy Oifigiúil be sure to pop in to the Luthier Collective to play some top quality instruments. We're on the main street right next to the Old Bakehouse.
Try a Harrington Harp and guitar and a mandolin made by Macdara Ó Faoláin, among others.
We're here all week
Had a great time as usual at An Gríanán with Cairde Na Cruite yesterday. It was fairly manic so probably didn't get around to talking to everyone but you can also catch me at Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy Oifigiúil next week
We are delighted to welcome these wonderful makers and supplier to An Grianán for our annual Meet the Makers exhibition. Where would Irish harping be without the amazing luthiers, harpmakers and suppliers who provide us with our wonderful harps and strings.
The harpmakers will be in An Grianán to answer your questions and display their harps from 3pm

The ITMA released this lovely interview with Sean Con Johnny yesterday, on the first anniversary of his passing. He was my mother's first cousin and every time we were up in Teelin we'd inevitably bump into him either walking along the Carrick Road or playing in a session in one of the pubs. The interview is a nice recollection of how he got into playing music and features some very well known players. He was a lovely man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Thanks to Karen Marshalsay for the video!
On the ferry back to Ireland after the Edinburgh International Harp Festival, and what a festival it was! I learned about binkies, bitties, and wee frees, the Highland clearances and that Scottish Blend tea is pretty damn tasty. Beidh mé ar ais!
