South Mall, Cork, 1968
Perhaps of interest to Corkonians is this image of South Mall (with a ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle). The photograph dates to about 1968. South Mall is one of the principal streets in Cork. It runs from Grand Parade to Parnell Place and was built over what was once a channel of the River Lee. Traditionally, South Mall was one of the main commercial districts in Cork and it continues to house offices for many financial and legal institutions. The rather bland-looking office block on the right in the image is the Irish Life Assurance building. The first-floor cast iron balcony of what is now known as Hibernian House (built in 1829 as The County Club) is visible on the left. The image forms part of the photographic collection of ‘The Capuchin Annual’ publication.

Our Story
Rated one of 'Cork’s Best Bars' by The Guardian Newspaper, Dennehy's first opened it's doors in 1957 on Cornmarket Street (known to Corkonians as the Coal Quay) at the historic old town of Cork City in a building dating back to 1760. Founded by Maura Dennehy the bar was passed on to her son Con Dennehy and wife Mary in 1993. Still in the family today the bar is currently run by Mary Dennehy and her Sons.
The area has a long history of street trading dating back centuries, a place where generations of Cork’s citizens bought food and other articles. Working-class Irish women survived as street traders on The Coal Quay, selling fruit, vegetables and second-hand clothing. Locally they were known as ‘the Shawlies’ because of the distinctive, traditional black shawls they wore on the streets and were a common sight Leeside into the 1970s.
Cork character and legend Kathy Barry (1909-82) who is famed in the Irish folk song 'Boys Of Fairhill', visited Dennehy’s Bar three times a day for a small whiskey and a glass of stout, and ran a legendary "shebeen" to the back of the premises. (Irish: síbín - originally an illicit bar, speakeasy or club where alcoholic beverages were sold without a licence).
