At the heart of the In Your Own Time and Place festival will be the 11th Sonic Vigil marathon, taking place 16 September from 12pm to 6pm at Cork Opera House.

One of Ireland’s most significant improvisation and sound art events, Sonic Vigil has been on the Cork scene since its founding by Danny McCarthy and Mick O’Shea in 2005. Over the years, this unique improvisation marathon has been held in venues all over the city, with performers from across the world.

This year's Vigil features very special guest, David Toop, alongside 22 performers and improvisers.

For the 6-hour marathon, performers will play according to a randomly-generated timetable, producing unexpected and unplanned solos, duos and trios developing across the day.

Thanks to The Journal of Music for this overview of the full 'In Your Own Time and Place' programme, focussing on the Sonic Vigil itself, with our guest David Toop.

From the organisers:
'We are excited to revive and expand Sonic Vigil, which is a multi-sensory event that merges sound, image, space, experience, taste and movement to bring unique experiences to new and old audiences in Cork.… [it] is a truly special event for its performers and audiences, as it offers time and space to practices that often live in-between more defined genres. We are interested in keeping Cork’s diverse sound art and improvisation scene alive through these and the many off-shoots that the Vigil has created over the years.'

Sonic Vigil Festival of Improvisation and Sound Art in Cork to Feature David Toop Weekend will include a range of Irish and international improvisers as well as a new film on Pauline Oliveros.
