VOTE Stone Vessel by architects located at Fartha, County Cork for the RIAI Public Choice Award 2024. Link in the description.
"We wanted to use a thousand year old technology to test a contemporary idea, to stretch old ways of working to search for something new, to imagine a synthesis of space and volume and structure, a resonant integrity rarely experienced in modern construction." - John Tuomey
The Rambling Houses at Fartha are experimental structures, lively demonstrations of local skills and built in locally sourced materials. Rambling houses were found in old Irish villages, gathering places for music and story-telling, places open to the passer-by.
The Stone Vessel is the second of what will be three structures, built across the spring and summer months of 2023. It is a development out of ten years’ collaboration between O’Donnell + Tuomey and Joseph Walsh. Assembled by hand, stone on stone, the Stone Vessel is built within the limitations of available material, walls made of fieldstone quarried out of the immediate site, or locally sourced harder limestone for quoins and lintels.
Today, Ambassador Maruyama welcomed Ms Madeline Cherry from Joseph Walsh Studio, Co. Cork, photographer Mr Andrew Bradley, and Ms Marie Phelan to Japan House in Dublin. The suite is regarded as an iconic piece from the early years of Mr Walsh’s career as an Irish Designer and Maker.

Today marks Teddy Abrams first in situ performance on the Conductor's Rail at the Louisville Orchestra.
Completed in White Ash with Ebonised Base, the Conductor's Rail was revealed to the public during Making In 2023 last September in Fartha. We were fortunate to welcome Teddy Abrams, Music Director of the and recent Grammy Award Winner, on this special occasion for an inaugural concert.
“As a conductor, Teddy Abrams is full of energy, and tries to reach each person in the orchestra, which gave me the idea of creating a rail that would swipe around him to hold him but also capture the movement, as it is tracing the movement of the baton.
The challenge of making such a piece did not revolve around its crafting – it’s an area that we are experienced in – but on how relevant it would be in the orchestra. We were adding this new, very contemporary piece into an ensemble of instruments that have existed for centuries." – Joseph Walsh
On Thursday, Grammy Award Winner , Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, will hold his first performance in situ with the recently completed Conductor's Rail in White Ash with Ebonised Base.
