Great activity and Incredible work at Harpers Island Wetlands, New Harper’s Island workbook for schools launched and BT Biological & Ecological Sciences Award winners for Harper's Island Projct acknowledged.
As Mayor of the County of Cork I was delighted to launch the Harper’s Island Workbook, a special publication written and designed by renowned local author and educator Jim Wilson encouraging the interest of young children in the beauty of nature and wildlife. This gives our children the opportunity to enrich their lives with knowledge of birds and biodiversity. Funding provided by Cobh Municipal District will provide local primary schools, in Glounthaune, Carrigtwohill, and Cobh, with copies of the workbook. I was delighted to welcomed representatives from both Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil, Dunkettle and Glounthaune National School who received physical copies of the workbook on behalf of their schools today. The activity book will be available on Harper’s Island Website to download, so I encourage all ages to look as I am sure we all have lots to learn about the different species that inhabit these wonderful wetlands.
Furthermore, I welcomed Éadaoin and Ciarán Farrell, two local secondary school pupils entered a project linked to Harpers Island and won the Biological & Ecological Sciences – Intermediate Group Category in this year’s Young Scientist Awards
Harpers Island Wetlands is a site in Glounthaune which is one of the most important areas of Cork Harbour for wetland birds, supporting internationally important numbers of some species that use wetland habitat on and surrounding the island. Cork County Council is proud to own the habitat which provides a refuge to so many wildlife species and provides people with the opportunity to watch and learn about wildlife from a state-of-the-art establishment. Looking around the site it is evident that the vigilance and ongoing hard work involved in maintaining Harper's Islands Wetlands is paying dividends. Well done and thanks to the groups involved in the management of this wonderful initiative. Harper Island Steering Group is made up of Cork County Council, Birdwatch Ireland, Glounthaune Community Association, Glounthaune Tidy Towns and Glounthaune Men’s Shed.
Well worth a visit!
