‘Perch’ my flower festival peacock repurposed and embellished with flowers/feathers made from recycled materials

12/12/2022

I don’t often speak about my art or what it means to me but recently I’ve been asked a couple of times what my art practice is about and why I do what I do.

Firstly I generally don’t like to comment on my work because I feel that art is a personal thing and each person should be allowed to take their own meaning from it without my influence.

That said, I view my art as a representation of the subject of portraiture from a whole person perspective, that is; body, mind and spirit.

‘In Black’ is a self portrait and with such a personal topic I felt it important to show how it came to be.

This time last year (just before Christmas) I had a trampoline accident with my little grandson and ended up with a black eye.

This innocent bump SHOOK my confidence to the core.

I found that people looked at me strangely or were weary of me, not knowing how to react.

And although I have always been confident in my own skin, not depending on makeup or dressing to impress, I began questioning those beliefs.

I became conflicted about how I should behave; should I conform to societies ‘norms’ and wear makeup or dark glasses to cover it up (hide the truth) or should I be brave, truthful to myself and the situation and own it? Was there some reason I should hide it? What would that achieve? And for whom?

I decided to brave the pre Christmas adventures bare faced.

I was truly shocked at the reactions.

Some looked at me with pity and some in avoidance or contempt. Having a bruised eye most definitely helped me see the world through a different lense.

I felt like I’d been attacked even though I hadn’t. so I decided I was going to paint a self portrait both for my own self confidence and hopefully effect some change.

Now I know that this post will not do much to with regards to victim shaming or stopping abusers but I live in hope that in some small way (although I’m not a victim) that I could raise awareness about violence and abuse and perhaps make (even just a little) difference,

take a look 👀 BEYOND DOUBT

Which is the true image?

The seated figure?

Or the surrounding colors?

Melting and blending into each other much like thoughts do. The internal process that shapes who we are as human beings or the ‘vibe’ it creates.

The theme for this year’s is ‘Gather’

The pieces I've been creating recently have been around the notion of ‘Gather your thoughts’.

Relating to feelings and thoughts about ourselves, life and who we are in relation to how our internal chatter, self talk affects and develops or inhibits our self confidence. The link between the image we portray to the world and our level of self confidence I believe is derived from the common human desire to ‘fit in’ with our peers.

To sit for a portrait whether n**e or clothed takes a certain amount of bravado. It is not always easy to have the self confidence to show up as yourself with all your imperfections and vulnerabilities, leaving yourself open to criticism.

‘In Black’
Is a self portrait in oil and acrylic paint.

With such a personal topic I felt it important to show my own struggles. Recently I had an accident and ended up with a black eye, an innocent bump which shook my confidence to the core. I found that while I had always been confident in my own skin, not depending on makeup or dressing to impress, I began questioning those beliefs. I became conflicted about how I should behave; should I conform to societies ‘norms’ and wear makeup to cover it up (hide the truth) or should I be brave and own it? I believe these issues and the subsequent stereotypical reactions affect us all at some point and so this piece serves as a starting point for a conversation around societal issues relating to self confidence.

In contrast,

Beyond doubt’
is a n**e portrait in oil and acrylic paint painted from photos of a professional model.

The way I have chosen to portray him, surrounded by colours which melt and blend into one another, is chosen to signify a subconscious thought process. This is a process which is mostly internal but I believe can create a ‘vibe’ of insecurity or confidence depending on our feelings about our specific surroundings at that time.

Some may think I just stumble from one trendy thing to the next (fashion to murals to craft etc) following the crowd trying to please,
and they would be right,
partly…

But recently I’ve been looking back and taking stock of where I’ve come from and how I arrived at where I am now and realized I been a portrait artist all along, I was just too stubborn to settle on one thing 😏

The photos illustrates some of my story from 1990 when I went to work with my grandfather ( a press photographer with the Sligo champion) through my fashion days to the present day.

What’s your journey been like? Does who you are now reflect where you started?
Let me know in the comments
