Moville is a colourful little coastal town on the east of Inishowen and on the western shore of Lough Foyle. Moville has a rich history, featuring the (reported) oldest bridge in Ireland, local legend has it that the bridge was built by St. Patrick himself. Moville was also a stop for large transatlantic steamships, picking up Irish emigrants en route to America & Canada. The Canadian Pacific line established a terminal in Moville connecting Liverpool and Montreal for Irish emigrants going to Canada. The town now receives little maritime traffic but the shore still plays a part in Moville life, with the Inish adventures water park, beautiful walks and a small fishing harbour. The town also features tasty eateries, boutique accommodation and much more. You can read further on Moville here bit.ly/Moville.

BELTANY STONE CIRCLE
Today is Bealtaine, one of the four major Irish Celtic annual festivals along with Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasa. It signifies the end of the long winter with a return of the light and the beginning of summer.
Named after the festival, the Beltany Stone Circle on an elevated site on the outskirts of Raphoe has been a place of Bealtaine celebrations for thousands of years. The name translates from Irish as Bright Fire.
Constructed earlier than originally thought, believed now to be in approximately 3000 BC, this stone circle monument is older than Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt.
For the feast of Bealtaine, the community would assemble with their cattle at the site where fires would be lit. They would remain for as long as it took for all the cattle to be driven between fires as a symbolic act of purification and fertility. Its aim was to destroy any disease or parasites the animals might be carrying and to protect them from future ailments.
The stone circle was also a place to barter animals and other valuables. But it was not just a gathering place for drovers. Great meetings would have taken place here where disputes would be settled and decisions made.
There are 64 remaining standing stones from an original estimated 80 stones which needed to be strong enough to withstand the heat and the frenzied movement of large beasts.
One of the two alignments with two large stones in the circle takes place at sunrise in early May, the other during the winter solstice.
ADDENDUM:
Following yesterdayโs post, custodian of the fort, archaeologist and broadcaster Mary Harte, points out that Beltany is a modern name.
โ[It] was given by an amateur archaeologist and British naval officer Boyle-Somerville in 1909. Unfortunately it has been perpetrated as the orientation of this multipurpose pre-Christian ritual site ever since. Similarly his assertion that there were 80 stones, only a guess. Interference has left us all guessing as to the true architecture. It does appear to mark many more solar and lunar events, stone circles unlike passage tombs have many orientations by the very nature of their construct and design. An Carn Glas was its recorded name in 12th century, possibly referring to the passage tomb(s) that sat in the enclosed sacred space. It sits overlooking a passage tomb complex of Neolithic period, stone circles being several thousand years later in the Bronze Age. Itโs on Tops Hill which is anglicised version of โtapโ meaning โto light the ceremonial torchโ. This monument has many alignments marking the arcs of the sun rise and sun sets, the 18 year cycle of the moon phase and all cross referenced by the constellations.โ
