At 107 Howth road is Harry Byrne’s public house. A coaching inn has existed here since 1809 (some sources say 1798) and it became one of two official coach dispatch depots when the Holyhead-Howth-Dublin mail service formally began, in 1814. It had livery stables, a forge, and its own well. The well is now encased within the pub.
The first licensee was David Helliseyard about 1845. Thomas Carolan leased the premises from Lord Howth and the place was known as Carolan’s on the Hill, when that part of the Howth Road was open country. It was also known as ‘Biddy Carolan’s’. The premises, also operating as a grocery shop, opened at 6am to cater for country carmen making their journey from country outposts to Dublin City markets. In 1906, James J Corbett (whose benefactor was John Deneefe) became its owner and in 1947, one of his barmen, Harry Byrne, acquired the premises for €22,000. Since then, it has been known as Harry Byrne’s although its official name is Hollybrook House and, it is still run by the Byrne family. Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and William Carleton are known to have imbibed there. The building itself is red bricked with wood panelling and its large snug is a real gem. The premises also provides a stylish and popular beer garden.

Public Houses(3)
Cusack’s Bar stands at 145 North Strand Road. Historically themed, especially seafaring history, it is alleged that the Venerable Matt Talbot had his last drink here before turning to a new way of life.
Cusack’s once had an unexpected visit from a famous celebrity couple. They were actors, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, when Burton was making the film The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, in north county Dublin in 1965. The visit to Cusack’s occurred on an occasion when they were returning to their city centre hotel from a filming session. Elizabeth was apparently short taken by a call of nature. While she was powdering her nose in the gentlemen’s toilet (there was no ladies) a few locals chivalrously did sentry duty on the door and everyone on the premises were treated to a round of drinks by Burton.
