St Valentine – visit his Reliquary here in Dublin
St Valentine’s Day is gradually becoming a big event on the Dublin Calendar. At Halfpenny Bridge Holiday Homes we already have our first 2017 Bookings for that special day of romance and love – February 14th. Dublin is a great place to bring your loved one for a celebration due amazing winter buzz in the city and the great selection of restaurants, theatre and music venues. But there is another reason. The spiritual and more romantic visitors will want to explore a unique opportunity to celebrate their love. In Dublin you can visit the remains of St Valentine.
Increasingly people are becoming aware that St Valentine’s remains are interred in a special Reliquary in the city centre. In 1835 an Irish Carmelite priest, Dr John Spratt, was visiting Rome. He was well known in Ireland for his skill as a preacher but also for his great devotion to the poor of the Liberties area of Dublin. He had also recently been responsible for the building of a new church to Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Whitefriar Street. While in Rome his preaching became highly regarded and thousands of people came to hear him speak. He received many tokens of esteem and one of those was from Pope Gregory XVI. The pontiff suggested that a Reliquary of the remains of St Valentine should be sent to Ireland.
On November 10th, 1836 the Reliquary containing the remains arrived in Dublin and was brought through the streets in solemn procession. However it was not until the 1950’s that the life story of St Valentine became of significant public interest. St Valentine’s remains had been kept in quiet storage for over 100 years. As public interest in St Valentine grew it was decided to build a humble altar in the church with the Reliquary on display. In addition a new statue was carved by Irene Broe depicting the saint in the red vestments of a martyr and holding a crocus in his hands.
For a unique spiritual and romantic Dublin experience spend some time in quiet meditation in the historic and beautiful Whitefriar Street church. The church continues to be a place of devotion and prayer and quiet reflection is expected.

The ‘early birds’ are already active catching the best winter deals to Dublin. I always feel that visitors get to see the ‘real Dublin’ during the Winter months. The hoards of tourists are replaced by people seeking a learning environment where fun plays a big part. In fact Dublin city is at its most vibrant in the Winter with the arrival of academics, university and language students swelling the city centre population by over 70,000.The city is alive with activity day and night. The Theatre scene (see Gaiety Theatre picture above), Live Music Venues, Pubs and winter sport take off.
Compared to Northern USA, Canada and central Europe the climate in Dublin is gentle with most Winters having little or no snow. Due to the influence of the Gulf Stream which brings warm currents from Mexico around the island of Ireland we usually have winter temperatures of well above zero and frequently over 10 degrees Celsius. Now, its only fair to point out, that Dublin can be wet in the Winter but the city offers much to recommend it if you do your research and plan for those inclement days.
There is tremendous value for money at the moment for ‘early-birds’ booking their winter break. We are currently finding incredible winter flight bargains on Skyscanner.com, Aerlingus.com and Ryanair.com.
For example:
• USA – New York JFK to Dublin for US $ 494 round-trip in January 2017.
• Germany – Cologne to Dublin on Ryanair in November 2016 for Euro 51 round-trip (not a misprint)
• UK – London to Dublin on Ryanair in early December 2016 – very good availability at £35 sterling round-trip.
• UK – Manchester to Dublin in November – very good availability at £17 sterling round-trip
• Espana – Barcelona to Dublin on Ryanair in late November – still, loads of availability for Euro 34 round-trip
We are hearing that increasingly North American visitors are using Dublin as their base and enjoying Ireland’s amazing inexpensive flights to explore other European cities. Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair web sites are worth a visit for great bargains.
We have one North American couple, a shopper and a football fan, who are visiting Germany, UK and Spain and using our city centre Dublin apartment as their base for exploring Europe. A unique opportunity to experience the best soccer in the world at Barcelona, London (Chelsea fan) and Manchester (he is going to see United and City). And the shopping should be special as well. FX traders tell us that, in the coming months, the Dollar is set to increase further in value against the Euro.
Dublin is great base for exploring. If you book ahead you will find that our local flights to Europe are less than you might pay for a bus fare in your home country. Our apartments are in city centre and its just 40 mins to the airport. The airport bus departs every 15 minutes and you walk from our apartment for a few minutes to get to the bus stop. You can book our apartments from this page on the right hand side.
For flights use these links, below, to explore the prices as well as book on line:
Ryanair – usually offering the best prices
Aer Lingus – competitive prices to and from North America
Skyscanner – Price Comparison web site for flights – very good
