Thousands of 'money mules' operating in Ireland, gardaí warn 16/01/2024

In the first half of 2023 there was a 50% increase in money laundering in Ireland. Could you accidentally, through innocence or naivety become a "Money Mule"? This film shows how it can happen and the structure of the international organised crime gangs behind it. Anyone can be a recruited to be a money mule but it is particularly prevalent among 18-24 year olds, and even some as young as 14. Anyone with a bank account.

Now and then, AI can make magic! Dr Andrew Hines talks about how machine learning helped create a new Beatles song https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2023/1103/1414562-beatles-new-song-now-and-then-artificial-intelligence/

The official music video for ‘Now And Then’, directed by Peter Jackson, is live on The Beatles YouTube channel.
https://TheBeatles.lnk.to/NowAndThenVideo

Peter describes finding “a collection of unseen outtakes in the vault, where the Beatles are relaxed, funny and rather candid. We wove humour into some footage shot in 2023. The result is pretty nutty and provided the video with much needed balance between the sad and the funny.”

“I realised we needed the imagination of every viewer to create their own personal moment of farewell to The Beatles.”

Jackson concludes by saying he has “genuine pride” in the finished piece, his first ever music video “and I’ll cherish that for years to come.”

We were happy to sponsor the Cyber Security Summit last week at Croke Park in Dublin. Now in its second year, the conference featured a great panel of speakers and 400+ delegates. Ossian Smyth TD, Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications opened the conference, remarking that even though Ireland is increasing resources to fight cybercrime, it is up to the 15,000 people working in cyber in Ireland to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to secure their organisation’s critical assets. There was huge interest in our new MSc Cybersecurity from the many people considering further professional development in this area.
We were also delighted to see several UCD CS students and graduates as speakers, including:
Current student of our MSc Cybersecurity, Jenni Parry, Associate Director, Cyber Risk, Aon, who joined the panel discussion on building cyber resilience;
Graduate of our MSc Forensic Computing & Cybercrime Investigation, James Caffrey, Head of Capacity Building at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) who gave a Keynote address on cybersecurity as an enabler for economic growth;
Current MSc Advanced Software Engineering student Oluchi Anyabuike, a Senior Software Engineer at Fidelity Investments, who joined the panel on emerging technologies.

Advance Centre Webinar “Mitigating Cybersecurity Risks in Smart Manufacturing"
May 19, 2023 01:00 PM Dublin time on Zoom

The Advance Centre - Professional Education for Digital Transformation would like to invite you to our next lunchtime webinar. Our faculty and industry leaders will discuss key and recent advances in research and industry to address security risks in smart manufacturing.

Smart manufacturing involves the integration of advanced technologies such as robotics, smart sensors, and cyber-physical systems into the manufacturing process. This enables the creation of smart products and machines that can communicate with each other and with the wider production ecosystem, leading to greater efficiency and productivity.

To fully realize the potential of smart manufacturing, it is important to consider the entire value chain, from material processing to product modeling and enterprise simulation. This requires a high level of networking and data analytics to enable real-time decision-making and optimize production processes.

Join us to gain valuable insights into current trends and research in this field and the scientific issues and challenges. Our industry speakers will provide a perspective from their own experience and highlight the skills required to support increased digitisation within manufacturing.
