A massive congratulations to our very own Emma Daly who has spent the last week cycling the length of Ireland from Malin to Mizen with an amazing team of friends (including a few from DBFL) to help raise funds for the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association.
The team of cyclists raised a whopping €50,000 for the worthy cause, which has been a huge support to Emma’s family over the past year.
They finished the 700km route over 6 days in what turned out to be one of the hottest weeks of the year.
Speaking at the end of her fantastic charity challenge Emma said
“I would like to say thank you to everyone who donated. I am absolutely blown away by people’s generosity. It was the most incredible week with an amazing grand finale finish”.

DBFL provided civil and structural engineering services for Beckett Locke by Locke Hotels, working with Bennett (Construction) Ltd to develop and design the structural solution for the 8-storey aparthotel located beside the 3 Arena and Luas terminus in the Dublin Docklands.
The €35M development consists of 241 aparthotel rooms, varying from studio to one and two bed units with associated kitchenettes. Ground floor facilities include a reception, bar, restaurant, meeting rooms, gym and co-working space. The rooms on the upper floor are situated around a central lightwell that provides light to both the rooms and the ground floor lobby which has a 20m x 12m feature roof light overhead at first floor. The steel members to the roof light were specially designed with the glazing specialist to meet strict deflection criteria.
The structural form is that of an in-situ reinforced concrete frame with flat slab construction. The exposed concrete slabs, columns and core walls are incorporated into the interior design and thus, the quality of concrete finishes were achieved to an exceptionally high standard. The building is founded on reinforced concrete ground beams and pile caps spanning between reinforced concrete continuous flight auger piles to specialist design. The facade is a mix of SFS faced with a brick outer leaf and full height glazing/spandrel panel elements.
The development incorporates Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) in the form of a green roof and a rainwater harvesting system to collect run off from the roof and supply water to the WCs throughout the Aparthotel. The rainwater harvesting and attenuation tanks are constructed beneath the ground floor slab of the central void lobby.
After practical completion in August 2021, the Beckett Locke Aparthotel opened for business.
Great work from our engineers Fergal English, Gavin Murphy and their team.

Congratulation to Cairn Homes , Kildare County Council County Council and Clonmel Enterprises Ltd on the opening of Lyreen Avenue – a new street serving the Mariavilla development in Maynooth, Co. Kildare. DBFL Consulting Engineers were delighted to provide civil, structural and transportation engineering services from planning stage through to construction. The 0.8km long street connects Moyglare Road to Dunboyne Road and is a key piece of infrastructure for cyclists, pedestrians and road users in north Maynooth.
It's fantastic to see the four 2-storey high reinforced concrete V Frames cast to the northern portion of Block 2 at Grand Canal Harbour in Dublin 8. These have been designed and detailed by our structural engineering team to support 7 residential levels and a roof terrace overhead. These architectural expressions of structure shall be a very prominent feature at the epicentre of the overall development, occurring above a unique water feature and immediately facing the pedestrian thoroughfare and northern plaza.
When complete, the Grand Canal Harbour development will deliver 596 apartments and over 7,000sqm of retail, shared working spaces, internal amenities and landscaped communal spaces, all sitting over a 7,000sqm, 1-storey deep basement. The unique character of this historic dockyard is also being maintained with the restoration and refurbishment of the Harbour Warehouse protected structure.
Well done to our client and the collective team on this project; Marlet Property Group, Burke-Kennedy Doyle Architects , Walls Construction and SMG Formwork.

DBFL are proud to see the main structure of the new dormitory building at Alexandra College is now completed.
The primary structure of this modern facility is in-situ concrete below the 1st floor, with precast concrete construction taking over above this point. Once completed, this 3 and 4 storey stepped building will be a high-quality facility containing a mix of 97 single and shared bedroom units.
This will provide accommodation for over 200 students and staff during the academic year. In addition, there are large open plan study halls, social spaces and recreational rooms on the ground floor.
To accommodate the open plan spaces and support the precast units above, DBFL designed up to 50m long continuous RC beams made up of spans which reached 9m in length. The ends of these beams perform as cantilevers of up to 2.4m in places which allows for a substantial set-back in the façade between the ground and first floors.
DBFL are delighted to have been part of the design process and look forward to the full completion of the project early next year.

DBFL’s Fergal English describes the solutions to the unique and complex challenges on Central Plaza, Dame Street. This landmark project, which is dramatic both inside and out, commands the skyline in Dublin city centre. The redevelopment involves significant reconfiguring of the structural cores which, given the hanging nature of the structure at One Central Plaza, remained fully loaded from the top during the works.
The original roof of the building was given over in its entirety to plant, which has now been concealed within the basement and in strategic locations at high level that are obscured from view. Innovative structural solutions were required to affect this change without compromising the architectural vision.
Along with these key structural challenges, DBFL’s team has also undertaken the engineering design works for the repurposing of the previously existing two storey basement car park and the main plaza area which have been opened up to house exciting new retail, leisure and dining spaces. DBFL worked with Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, Homan O'Brien and Walls Construction Limited in the successful delivery of this landmark project.
DBFL proudly provided the structural and civil engineering design services for this landmark project at Aungier Street in the historic centre of Dublin city.
A major structural challenge for this project from the outset was to propose a structural scheme with enough flexibility to accommodate major changes to the structural load paths from prospective archaeological finds. During the enabling works phase, three major archaeological finds were uncovered including the remains of the two recorded monuments of the 11th century Church of Saint Peter and the theatre stage pit steps belonging to the Aungier Street Theatre which opened in March 1733.
The unforeseen and most significant of these is the Viking era stone structure dated AD1070 in the middle of the LIDL store footprint directly beneath columns supporting a 7 storey 300 bed student accommodation block above.
This presented a significant structural engineering challenge to relocate these columns and the supporting piled foundations so not to disturb the sensitive thousand-year-old masonry remains.

Last Friday the Minister for Housing, Local Government & Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, handed over the keys to the 2000th remediated house completed under the Pyrite Resolution Board’s Pyrite Remediation Scheme (PRS).
DBFL were delighted to be present at this milestone event. Since 2014 DBFL have provided consultancy services to the PRS and have been responsible for the specification and inspection for completion of over 60% of all properties remediated. During 2006/2007 DBFL established the engineering principles which explained the manner in which pyritic stone beneath the floor slabs acted in causing damage to the buildings and spearheaded the remedial specifications to resolve this widespread problem enabling owners to reoccupy their houses securely.

DBFL hosted a Hospice Coffee Morning across our 3 offices and remotely yesterday to take part in raising much needed funds for St. Francis Hospice.
Staff at our Dublin, Cork and Waterford offices brought in cakes and enjoyed a safe socially distanced cup of coffee on their own floors, with donation boxes to collect funds. Our staff working remotely also got involved, baking at home and having a chat over a cuppa through Microsoft Teams. If you look closely at our photo collage you’ll see the amazing effort one of our transportation engineers went to in creating ‘traffic sign cakes’ for everyone!
A very different coffee morning from previous years but we found a way to safely come together for this good cause.
Established in 1992 with Bewley’s of Dublin the Hospice Coffee Morning has been raising much needed funds for 28 years. The event has raised over €39 million in that time and keeps growing every year with more and more organisations getting involved. Read more https://hospicecoffeemorning.ie/
