A special thanks from DYDC Artistic Director Mariam Ribon

“I was very honoured to have been invited to Galway Gati Lasya’s Salangai Pooja on Saturday as their Chief Guest.

The event was beautiful and it was very impressive to witness the skill and talent of Sahana’s pupils in the Bharatnatyam dance technique and to be surrounded by such a rich culture.

Thank you to Sahana and all involved for their warm hospitality and making me feel so welcome.”

Sarah Curran started dancing when she was 10 years old in Ruth Shine school of Dance, from there she trained mostly in ballet and modern.

She became a member of the Irish National Youth Ballet (INYB) in 2022 and trained and performed with them until 2023. During her second year at INYB she also attended Inchicore College in their Teaching Training Course as a transition year student, where she met Mariam Ribon Artistic Director of Dublin Youth Dance Company & The Irish Youth Dance Festival (IYDF). Sarah was invited to join the company during their last term in the season and performed with the Senior ensemble at the IYDF in the Pavilion Theatre and at the YDance Destinations Festival in Glasgow, Scotland.

DYDC has become a safe space for Sarah; she has gained confidence to choreograph, develop her technical contemporary dance skills, and delve into her creativity, devising her own solo work. Through dance classes with Mariam, she learned that she had that ability.

Creating her own choreography was one of Sarahs biggest challenges in dancing, however creating her first solo became enjoyable instead of scary and she did it through DYDC’s Emerging Voices Programme, mentored by DYDC’s Alumnus Rocio Dominguez, who was a great mentor and helped her improve her confidence greatly. Sarah truly enjoyed presenting her work at the DYDC’s Winter Gala at Smock Alley Theatre’s Boys School in November 2024.

Currently Sarah is still training with Ruth Shine and is proudly a Senior Member of Dublin Youth Dance Company.

As well as performing choreographies by Ruth Shine, DYDC’s Guest Choreographer Rosie Stebbing and International Choreographer Kamara Gray, Artistic Director of Artistry Youth, London, Sara will perform her solo “Fear” at the IYDF on Sunday 7th July in

Irish National Youth Ballet and Youth Ballet West, Galway have collaborated on a piece for 8 dancers. Both companies work with dancers from around the island of Ireland and are performance oriented companies for dancers aged 10-20.

The Irish National Youth Ballet, established in 1995, is the premier youth ballet company in Ireland. Funded by the Arts Council, the company aims to give the best young dancers in Ireland the opportunity to train with brilliant teachers and choreographers and to perform in exciting semi-professional productions throughout the year. Many of our former members have gone on to professional training overseas.

Having the performance experience with INYB can really help those dancers when it comes to auditions for further training.

By providing the opportunity for young dancers to gain performance experience, train with top-class teachers, work with acclaimed choreographers and work closely with professional dancers we aim to lead these young dancers to fully develop their artistic potential.

YBW seeks to introduce ballet to diverse audiences and raise the profile of ballet in the West of Ireland.
