Dilip Kumar makes a swashbuckling appearance on the poster of Aan (1952), directed by Mehboob Khan. The epic, written by R. S. Choudhary, also featured Nimmi, Premnath, Murad and Nadira in her first lead role in cinema.  With action-packed sword-fighting scenes and sequences of Dilip Kumar taming wild stallions among other large-scale moments, the film established Mehboob Khan's command over the cinematic epic. The music of the film was composed by Naushad with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni.

Known as The Tragedy Queen of Hindi cinema, actor and poet Meena Kumari (1932-1972), born as Mahjabeen Bano, was an unforgettable presence on the big screen and is considered one of the tallest stars of Indian cinema. It is said that at one point in time, no top hero was willing to work opposite her, such was her standing and the power of her roles. Hailing from a poverty-stricken family, she started her film career as a child actor with films like ‘Leather Face’ (1939), ‘Pooja’ (1940), ‘Nai Roshni’ (1941), ‘Kasauti’ (1941) and ‘Garib’ (1942) and was rechristened as Baby Meena on the sets of ‘Ek Hi Bhool’ (1940). Prior to her work as a female lead, Kumari starred in many action and mythological films during the pre-Independence days, mostly playing Hindu goddesses. At the young age of 14, Baby Meena became the heroine Meena Kumari with her role in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ (1946) and films like ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’ (1946), ‘Piya Ghar Aaja’ (1947) and ‘Bichhade Balam’ (1948).

At 20, Kumari achieved star status with ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), winning her first Filmfare Award. It is this film that can be stated to have catapulted Meena Kumari into the top league. What followed were a string of successful roles in — ‘Parineeta’ (1953), ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai’ (1960), ‘Kaajal’ (1965), ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962), ‘Aarti’ (1962), ‘Mere Apne’ (1971) and ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ (1963), which epitomized the traditional Indian woman. In the year 1963, Meena Kumari created history by being the only actress to have been nominated for all slots for the Filmfare Best Actress award. The films were - ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, ‘Aarti’ and ‘Main Chup Rahungi’. In Guru Dutt’s ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, Meena Kumari created the unforgettable tragic heroine Choti Bahu who longs for intimacy with her pleasure-seeking Zamindar husband. Her personal and professional lives melded, she was often seen as an extension of that character.

‘Pakeezah’ (1972), directed by Kamal Amrohi and considered Kumari’s swansong, had first been conceptualized back in the 1950s but got stalled several times, due to technical problems and later, due to the couple’s estrangement. Set in Lucknow at the turn of the 20th century, it revolves around a nautch-girl Sahibjaan, and her desire to love and be loved, with fantasy, poetry and nostalgia rolled into an epic scale. Suffering from liver cirrhosis, Kumari was aware that her time was limited and tried her best to complete the film, shooting even through her severe illness. The film became a big hit and enjoyed a successful run of 33 weeks, with Kumari passing away the month following the film’s release. Beyond the label of a tragedy queen, Meena Kumari found her own voice in her poetry and wrote Urdu verses under the pseudonym Naaz. The greatness of Meena Kumari will live forever through her films and poems.

Our Story

I have great pleasure in welcoming you all to the 10th Indian Film Festival of Ireland 2019 (IFFI), at Movies@dundrum, and various Dublin City, public libraries, educational institutions and beyond.

The IFFI has been established over the past decade as Ireland’s boutique film festival, introducing the world’s largest film industry, the Indian cinema to the Irish audience. The IFFI 2019 is delighted to spread its wings across the city, and we shall be screening films simultaneously in various locations across Dublin, Ireland.

The popularity of Indian films is growing in Ireland as evidenced by the grand Indian production, Ek Tha Tiger. This film was shot and co-produced in 2011 in Dublin. We are now developing our own Irish-Indian cross-over fiction and non-fiction films to be made here and so creating an Irish-India film production corridor.

Like the previous IFFIs, we welcome stars from the world of Indian Cinema as festival guests. This year we are delighted to welcome Parvati Nair, an actor from the South Indian film industry and the star in mini-retrospective. Also attending the festival is Prakash Jha, a prolific actor, director, and screenwriter. His film Pareeksha will be the opening gala film at the festival. Also in attendance will be Fokiya Akhtar, a documentary filmmaker, and media professor.
