The Police Service of Northern Ireland has apologised after information about all of the force's serving officers and staff was published in a data breach.

At a press conference in Belfast this evening, PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd said the surname, initial, the rank or grade, the location and the departments of all current officers had been accidentally published in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Mr Todd said: "In terms of the security for individuals, there's nothing at the moment to suggest there's any immediate security concerns, but we have put actions in place to ensure that if anything does arise we will be aware of that, and then we can mitigate accordingly."

He added: "This is human error. We've looked into the circumstances, we'll continue with our investigation, but the very early considerations are that this is simple human error and the people who have been involved in the process have acted in good faith."

Looks like a simple mistake by a human being, but a risk assessment could of identified the potential for a breach.

Cybersecurity is of utmost importance in our modern, interconnected world. With the increasing reliance on digital technology and the internet, protecting sensitive data and systems has become critical. Cyber threats, such as hacking, data breaches, and malware attacks, pose significant risks to individuals, businesses, and governments.

Firstly, cybersecurity ensures the protection of personal and financial information. As we conduct various online transactions and store personal data digitally, safeguarding this information from unauthorized access is crucial to prevent identity theft and financial fraud.

Secondly, businesses rely heavily on digital infrastructure for their operations. Cybersecurity safeguards intellectual property, trade secrets, and customer data, helping companies maintain their competitive edge and preserve their reputation. A single data breach can lead to massive financial losses and erode customer trust.

Furthermore, cybersecurity is vital for national security and defense. Governments need to protect critical infrastructure, sensitive information, and communication channels from cyber-attacks that could disrupt essential services and compromise national security.

In addition, cybersecurity plays a crucial role in safeguarding public safety. With the rise of smart devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), securing these interconnected devices is essential to prevent potential attacks on critical systems, such as transportation and healthcare.

Ultimately, the significance of cybersecurity extends beyond individual privacy and business interests. It underpins the stability and trust in the digital realm, impacting economies, societies, and even international relations. Implementing robust cybersecurity measures is imperative to foster a safe and resilient digital environment for everyone.

The Government is to create a national anti-ransomware organisation and offer cash subsidies to small businesses to help fight cybersecurity threats.

In a mid-term review of the 2019-2024 Cyber Security Strategy launched by Communications Minister Eamon Ryan, SMEs “and other societal stakeholders” are to benefit from a “programme of financial support, in accordance with EU provisions, to improve cybersecurity resilience and facilitate innovation”.

The National Cyber Security Centre will also “establish and lead a National Counter-Ransomware Task Force to coordinate efforts to respond to this severe cyber threat”.

The proposals did not include any figures for how much will be provided or how it will be apportioned.

Ransomware continues to plague Irish businesses and public organisations, with Munster Technological University and a number of charities among the most high-profile victims this year.

Irish companies have been warned that they could face potential legal actions if their systems are compromised by scammers and then used to con suppliers or customers.
“They got into your system, they got your details,” said detective chief superintendent Pat Lordan, who is head of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.

“Without that detail, they would not succeed in scamming [other companies] – the weakness in security really was on your side.”

“It's not something we get involved in as a rule but I’ve seen legal terms become involved and in some cases, I have seen where [the business] is liable,” he added.

This issue could occur if a cyberattack on a company results in loss of access to systems, such as emails.

Scammers, who now have sole control of these systems, could then contact existing suppliers or customers to send invoices, request payments or update existing bank account details for upcoming transfers.

It is more likely that this type of scam would prove to be effective, with those committing the fraud using official contact details of the business that companies are familiar with and would then assume to be legitimate.

Cyber security is a critical aspect of any organization's operations, regardless of its size or industry. In today's digital age, the threat of cyber-attacks is ever-present and constantly evolving, and as such, it's essential to be proactive in protecting yourself against these threats.

If you're unsure about your cyber security posture or don't fully understand your risks, it's imperative that you book a consult with a trusted cyber security professional. Without a clear understanding of your risks and vulnerabilities, you're essentially leaving yourself open to attack.

Cyber attacks can have serious consequences, ranging from financial loss and reputational damage to legal ramifications and loss of sensitive data. In some cases, cyber attacks can even cause the complete shutdown of a business.

Therefore, it's essential to take cyber security seriously and be proactive in protecting yourself against potential threats. By booking a consult with a cyber security expert, you can gain a comprehensive understanding of your organization's cyber security posture and identify potential vulnerabilities. You can then work with the expert to implement appropriate measures to mitigate these risks and ensure the security of your organization's digital assets.

"Attackers always find new ways to evade detection. Good defence is no longer enough," said Charles Henderson, Head of IBM Security X-Force.

"To break free from the never-ending rat race with attackers, businesses must drive a proactive, threat-driven security strategy," Mr Henderson added.

A third of Irish businesses have paid ransom to cybercriminals, with a quarter saying they had done so multiple times, a new survey has claimed.

The Typetec survey found the average cost of ransom paid was just under €23,000, and two-thirds of those who paid said they had done so multiple times. More than 70 per cent said they felt more vulnerable to an attack.

The overall number of businesses that had paid such a ransom was lower than last year, when the figure stood at 52 per cent. However, despite complying with the demands, more than two-thirds said sensitive data was leaked anyway, with 53 per cent saying it was placed on the dark web.

More than half of Irish SMEs have a reserve of cryptocurrency to meet the demands that could possibly be placed on them, while 69 per cent now have cybercrime insurance.
