10 Questions with Pelé The Brazilian soccer legend talks about his favorite goal, the World Cup and why he’d be even better today
Are Irish kids getting enough exercise?
Nope, they’re not.
In fact, only 1 in 5 Irish children are getting enough exercise, according to experts at a recent conference in Croke Park byEarly Childhood Ireland
Parents don’t know their kid’s actual activity levels
Dr Catherine Woods of DCU said parents are in denial about their kid’s activity levels – and their weight problems. One revealing stat showed 3 in 4 parents feel their child is getting enough exercise, although just one in five children actually is.
At the same conference, Professor Donal O’Shea warned that we have reached a “tipping point” with obesity levels in children. More than 20% of Irish children are currently overweight or obese. The bigger problem is that most parents of overweight children (between 75 and 85%) think their child is actually a normal weight.
Inactivity will mean shorter lives for our children
The initiative DesignedToMove.org claims that today’s children have a life expectancy five years less than their parents due to their inactivity. According to the initiative, this year, physical inactivity will be attributed to 5.3 million deaths, while smoking is responsible for 5 million. The initiative is advocating for early positive experiences for children under 10 in sport and play.
Official guidelines say children five years and over should get at least an hour of activity a day. Children four and under should have three hours of physical activity a day, which can include low-intensity exercise like walking to school.
Unfortunately, schools can’t be relied on to fulfil these activity quotas.
Why PE in school won’t solve the problem
A recent study by Eurydice (The European Union's Education Information Network), revealed Ireland has far fewer hours allocated to Physical Education than most other European countries. In primary school, the recommended time is 37 hours per school year in Ireland (4% of actual time spent in school). Compare that to France’s 108 hours per year.
According to a recent study by Aviva health, 80% of Irish secondary school teachers feel PE should be a subject in the Leaving Cert. Professor Niall Moyna DCU said
"It is not taken seriously because it is not an examinable subject."
Irish track and field athlete David Gillick believes schools should shoulder some responsibility for their students’ health.
"I think we really have to make an effort in the schools to help shape our kids’ futures — not only from a sporting perspective, but also in terms of life skills."
The role of the parent
At the conference in Croke Park, the experts emphasised that parents must lead by example. A sedentary child will most certainly grow up to be a sedentary adult.
Dr Woods recommends that parents ask and encourage their kids to go out and play, give them equipment, and of course be active with them.
The possibilities are endless: play Frisbee with your kids, skip with them, bring them swimming or fly a kite (remember those!).
Our personal favorite is to get a trampoline. You’ll be fighting with your kids about who gets to go next!
