Transcript of Darren Byrne's interview with RTÉ Radio 1 yesterday:
Gavin Jennings: For the first at a sporting occasion here the new Irish Sign Language version of the National Anthem will be performed before the Limerick-Galway Senior Hurling final. The conductor will be Irish Sign Language interpreter Darren Byrne. He’s on the phone now. Good morning Darren.
Darren Byrne: Good morning Gavin.
GJ: Take us through what you’re going to do on Sunday?
DB: So the plan is that we’re going to perform alongside the Artane Boys Band. Senan Dunne will be performing the Irish Sign Language version of the National Anthem that was produced for the Seanad Public Consultation Committee on the National Anthem. So it was done in consultation with members of the Deaf community. It is actually based upon a version that Senan and I performed opposite the GPO on Easter Monday in 2016 as a part of the centenary celebrations with a choir called Glória DLGC that we’re a part of.
GJ: Senan would be familiar to viewers because he does the News for the Deaf on RTÉ at the moment. So, what will we see on the big screen at Croke Park, and for viewers at home as well?
DB: So our understanding at the moment – and you’re right they should know him from the news – what should be happening is that the lyrics will come up as normal and Senan should be on screen with those, signing away, so that people can get an idea of what the ISL version is. We’re not sure of the logistics in terms at home, hopefully it will be visible as well and that people will get to see it there. It’s kind of a really big thing to have so many people witnessing the Irish Sign Language version of the Anthem at the same time.
GJ: So you’re conducting Senan, is that right?
DB: Yeah, so Senan, like any performer, learns his song, but Senan, being a Deaf person, won’t get the tempo from the band beside him, so I’ll basically make sure that he’s on spot for where he needs to be with the song as he’s going through it.
GJ: And tell us how this came about. This is a unique occasion for Croke Park, and indeed for any sporting occasion here.
DB: Yeah, it’s brilliant. So the history of where the Anthem – the Official Anthem – came from is that last year the Lord Mayor of Cork City was visiting Bishopstown Community School and the hearing students all learned the National Anthem, but the Deaf students didn’t have a version to learn so Alain Newstead, who was a student at the time, wrote to the Public Consultation Committee and said, “we don’t have a version. Can you make a version?” And the Seanad consultation committee invited him up, he was a witness there, along with one of his teachers Miss Dowling, and John Cottrell was the head of the Student Council. And the Seanad Committee said, “well, you create one then”. The school got different people from the Deaf community together. We ended up using the version that Senan and I created and then took feedback from the community… so this is like a community version that we’ve ended up in the end. And this went back to the committee and the committee has asked sporting organisations if they would be will to show the ISL version of the Anthem just to include Deaf people in the event, which is great.
GJ: Do you know are there going to be any more occasions other than the all Ireland hurling final that this is going to be done?
DB: We’d really hope that it’s going to be there all the time. We’ve produced a video version. One of the videos has Alain, the young chap, doing an introduction about how it happened and then Senan is signing the Anthem. And then another version is just Senan signing the Anthem directly. So it’s available, if sporting organisations are interested in it, they can basically use that video and put it up on the big screen anytime.
GJ: Yeah, because there are three more finals at Croke Park over the next few weeks. Have you been to an All Ireland final before?
DB: I haven’t. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be pretty amazing. Everyone is telling me that it is going to be the best experience I’m ever going to have.
GJ: Who you going to cheer for on Sunday?
DB: [COUGHS] My in-laws are from Limerick, so I guess I’ll have to go that way if I have to…
[BOTH LAUGH]
GJ: Well stay tuned, we’ve got a lovely piece from Petula Martin, a Limerick native looking forward to the final so that might get you in the mood for it. The best of luck to yourself and to Senan. That’s Darren Byrne, Irish Sign Language interpreter who’s going to be conducting the first sign language performance of the National Anthem at the All Ireland Hurling Final on Sunday.

Lates news from Leinster House as we were there witnessing the wrap up of the Irish Sign Language Bill.
John Bosco Conama gave a short summary:
I’m here at Leinster House with Lianne Quigley, Chairperson of IDS, Eddie Redmond CEO of IDS, Fr Gerry Tyrell, Brendan Lennon of DeafHear and two interpreters: Darren Byrne and Caroline O’Leary.
We were there to witness the wrapping up of the Bill and we were told to expect ten to fifteen minutes but it ended up 35 minutes or so. Each party wanted to record their congratulations!
The Bill will be sent to the President in next few days and there will be no open ceremony. For some rules. They will send us a photo of the historic signature and they might get someone to translate the twitter announcement next week.
Just let you know I had gone home last night as I was not here for all night and morning!!!!
A good and historic day for all of us!
