Join us for our first journal club of the year! This week’s theme is ‘Research in Psychiatry.’
The event will take place on the 19th of April at 5pm on Zoom!
The information explosion in the medical field poses a challenge on how to extract useful resources among a multitude of daily publications. A journal club is an effective approach to tackle these issues. It is a chance for medical students and clinicians to learn the principles of evidence-based practice through posing clinical questions, literature searching, and critical appraisal.
If you haven’t yet attended a journal club, this will give you flavour of what they are like. They are an integral element of residency and fellowship training in almost every medical specialty.
This event will be 45 minutes long. Each speaker will have eight minutes to present their research and two minutes for questions and discussions. We hope to see you there!

She has a strong interest in ensuring equity of outcomes for socially excluded people living with HIV.

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered increased levels of psychological distress worldwide. The youth, adolescents, and young college students feel that their future is spiralling out of control; the adult population faces the consequences of the pandemic’s effects on their diet and exercise habits; and the elderly population—at the highest risk of contracting a life-threatening form of the virus—have had their mental health severely affected. As we slowly move towards a post-pandemic way of life, now is not the time to turn a blind eye to these issues. Instead, we need to remain aware, listen to others, and advocate for the importance of mental health more than ever.
Read our feature article by Cameron Mitchell on TSMJ.ie for a mental health insight into the COVID-19 pandemic: one year later.
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the opportunity to transform the health sector and improve outcomes for patients. AI technology has already shown tremendous potential in form of diagnostics and imaging, particularly in breast cancer screening and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. AI technology provides more affordable health services to payors and patients by vastly reducing cost and increasing efficiencies.
Read our feature article by Nicolas Marchi for a concise summary of AI's potential in health care.

DID YOU KNOW?
PrEP is an antiretroviral medication that is safe and well-tolerated; the most common side effect being gastrointestinal that resolves after a few weeks. PrEP can be used by HIV-negative individuals, reducing the risk of HIV infection by 44-92%! It is mainly taken by men who have s*x with men (MSM), those with HIV-positive partner, those who engage in risky s*xual behaviour, and are intravenous drug users.
However, in Ireland, awareness about PrEP is low and there is an issue with non-adherence to the medication.
