The full interview with Manchán Magan interview for The STABLE Báinín Jacket

Our latest project we have been working on is the design and making of a new jacket which we are calling the Báinín. Drawn from traditional Irish clothing references from the west of Ireland and images of fishermen and land labourers of the last centuries, this jacket was a simple shape, collarless and with deep pockets, sometimes with buttons sometimes without. It was practical and could be worn over jumpers or shirts depending on the season.

Manchán Magan Travel Writer, Irish language and Folklore, is a lover and constant wearer of the Báinín jacket and it was with his support and encouragement and personal experience with this his favourite piece of clothing, we set about designing a new version, suitable for the way we live today.

The traditional jackets were made with hand spun native undyed wool so were typically cream or soft white in colour. Over time the name Báinín, became a reference not only to the colour but to the jacket itself. Variations were made and using dyed wool tweeds also became more common over time. It’s a beautiful word, so we are calling our latest addition to our STABLE clothing collection the Báinín Jacket.

As a piece of clothing it is very practical for the way we wear clothes today. It’s a single layer of wool woven tweed cloth, cardigan style, no collar, with off the shoulder seams. It’s light and layerable, an outer jacket over a t shirt or worn under a heavier outer coat. It looks great and is really comfortable.

Our design focused on simplicity, ease and comfort. We selected beautiful tweed woven by Andrew at Kerry Woollen Mills to make up this jacket. We added Irish linen into the mix by lining the pockets and introducing an inside facing for a flash of colour.

In our several chats with Manchán, he told us of his father who wore the jackets always and brought in 2 of these to see and use as references for our new design. It was wonderful to see the hand stitching and the detail and to see how the wool had aged so well with so much use.

Over the last few months our Báinín muse Manchán has helped us with testing out our sample patterns until we all felt we had it right. We think we do and are so happy to add it to our clothing collection. The Báinín jacket will be an enduring piece of clothing wearable for today. Style and function to last.

History of the Báinín (p**n. bánín) n. a jacket or overcoat made of woollen cloth. Báinín is the Irish word for a type of homespun wool cloth traditionally made in the west of Ireland. It is a diminutive of the word bán which means white. Báinín, the word itself, became synonymous with a jacket and an example of this is Fear an bháinín, the Connemara labourer which infers the man wearing the jacket made of the rough spun wool cloth. Here is the definition as given in Ó Dónaill’s dictionary; báinín, m. (gs. ~, pl. ~í). 1. ~ (tíre), woven woollen cloth. ~ brocach, speckled homespun cloth. ~ bán, white homespun cloth. 2. Flannel. ~ dearg, glas, red, grey, flannel. 3. Jacket made of white homespun woollen cloth. F:Fear an bháinín (bháin), the Connemara labourer.

One of the most rewarding consequences of our STABLE store are the chance meetings with incredible people. Conversations run and new friendships are made. A recent one was meeting this man when he walked through the door and with a hand in a sling, we got talking. He lives in Mozambique where he is building a rustic hotel folded into a rewilding and arts initiative . He was home for a visit and doing some carpentry work when he severed a finger. Time to stop and regroup. In the chats he mentioned his close friend and how she makes beautiful hats and jewellery. He was off to visit her in Barcelona. We got in touch with Andrea, asked her to make some of these hats for us which she did so beautifully. We received them in to us and proudly sits one in our window. In this photo taken recently in Phoenix Park, wears it with one of our Aran handknits. Thank you Eoin for this lovely journey and look forward to visiting you some day in your ! Handwoven hat by

Dress Like A Patriot … Tastefully - The Gloss Magazine 13/03/2024

THE GLOSS: Dress Like A Patriot … Tastefully
by SARAH MCDONNELL

This weekend, fly the flag and still look good ….what we covet, above all else, is the Tricolour scarf by Stable of Ireland: yards and yards of soft Irish linen, in soft green, grey and gold. It’s a scarf and a flag, albeit with a little artistic license – slate grey replaces the white – and it can be worn in multiple ways.

“We wanted to create a scarf that represented the Ireland we know and love,” says Sonia Reynolds of Stable. “We chose the colours to mirror the natural surroundings on our small island: from the bright green seaweeds of Donegal and vibrant rich green moss in the Wicklow woods to the grey limestone of the Burren and the rolling clouds that come in off the Atlantic, and the deep russet orange of the Monbretia flower on the roadsides of West Cork.” Adds Stable co-founder Francie Duff: “It’s one of our most popular scarves: the STABLE Tricolour is worn and flown worldwide.”

Two Gloss staffers have Tricolour scarves and always look incredibly stylish at Six Nations matches and St Patrick’s Day dos. Publisher Jane McDonnell loves that it’s a “subtle iteration of the tricolour” and always wears it to rugby matches at home and abroad. “It travels well … huge and soft, and a much nicer way to convey support for the team than a tight green jersey or a horrible hat!” Beauty editor Sarah Halliwell even wore her Tricolour to her citizenship ceremony in December when she officially joined the ranks of Mná na hÉireann: “A gift to mark our momentous move to live in Dublin, for me the Tricolour scarf is a symbol of the joy I feel that I am lucky enough to get to live in Ireland. When I’m not wearing it, I hang it on my wall – I adore its subtle colours and vast softness. It’s one of my favourite things.”

Wrap yourself in the flag this week or consider sending the Tricolour to an Irish person living abroad, man or woman. It’s a stylish way to parade your patriotism. The Countess would definitely approve.

Thank you Team for such kind comments about our favourite scarf too! Have Tricolour, Will Travel!!
