We need your feedback!

Demand for our lampshade making classes is high (because you’re all amazing) so to try to accommodate everyone’s schedule we’re planning to add another mid-week class. *We’re aiming to hold more regular weekend classes from September onwards.

Morning classes are held between 10am-2pm. Afternoon classes between 2.30pm-6.30pm. So, you might prefer a Monday morning class or Wednesday afternoon class etc.

DESIGN AND MAKE A MODERN FRINGED EMPIRE LAMPSHADE with Shady and the Lamp

Join Master lampshade-maker Sarah O’Dea for an intimate three-four hour class where you will design, make and leave with your very own stunning fringed Empire lampshade.

The morning class takes place in Dublin 8 at 10am on Tuesday, July 30th. Everything you need will be at hand including a selection of colourful silks, fringes and trims.

Time to dream it all up again!

After 12 incredible years I’ve decided to take a step back. I want to do something that feels as fresh and exciting as when I first started Shady - so I’m taking some time to work out what that could be.

The website and online store will be offline for a little while but i’ll be checking in here if you’d like to get in touch.

Thank you for being part of this journey so far, I’m filled to the brim with gratitude.

Saturday, December 16th is our final day in the village and as a massive THANK YOU we’re holding our BIGGEST SALE EVER. This includes lampshades, lamp bases, furniture, bulbs and hardware. What a gorgeous night!!!

Killashee Hotel was filled to the brim with all the positive feels! It was an inspirational evening, and a whole lotta fun, connecting with such a supportive and talented community of makers and shakers.

While we didn’t win we’re just so proud to have been finalists in such an amazing group. Thank you so much to all the judges and everyone who voted for us!

Massive congratulations to all the finalists and winners. A special thank you for her heartfelt speech! Thank you Irish Country Magazine Design & Crafts Council Ireland for supporting these essential awards.

I spent an afternoon with Sinead in 2011.

I was a fashion stylist with a tabloid that she didn’t like (I had heard the stories of her storming the office to argue with the editor about a story she was unhappy about).

Most of the people we photographed arrived with at least one other person, a minder of sorts. Often a team. And we arrived with our team, makeup artists, hair stylists, my BTs suit bags.

But she didn’t want styling or makeup, so I’m just here to make sure everything goes smoothly. I was in my twenties and terrified.

I had spent my life listening to Sinead, my big sister adored her. I was exhilarated by the idea of getting to meet her. And braced myself for the force of nature that was about to storm into the hotel we were meeting at.

But she’s not a storm. She’s a gentle breeze. No team, she comes alone. She drove herself.

She’s too shy to charmingly greet everyone like a well-trained personality would. She quietly and politely says hello.

That smile.

We chat briefly. She heads off with the interviewer. We get some snaps (not this one - I don’t know where the ones we got are). She thanks everyone and leaves.

I brace myself again. I’ve never asked someone for their autograph. I run after her. I apologize. I explain that my sister loves her, we all love her. She beams. That smile. She giddily writes a note to my sister. It’s in a frame in her house now.

And she strolls off to her car. No driver. No PR person. No minder.

Even then I thought, why is no one minding Sinead O’Connor?

I really hope someone minded Sinead.

She’s left a legacy of creativity and deafening honesty.

We all have to mind that now.
