As the holiday season ends and the 2nd Semester begins at DCU, why not take a moment to learn more about some of Ireland more unusual seasonal traditions? The 6th of January, Epiphany Day, is also known as Nollaig na mBan or “Women’s Little Christmas” in Ireland. It is associated with a number of unique traditions and old myths across the Ireland Nollaig na mBan or “Women’s Christmas” falls on the 12th day of Christmas or “Little Christmas” and in Irish tradition, it belonged to the women of the house. It was a day for them to rest after the holidays and visit with friends while the men did all the housework It was considered bad luck to take down decorations before the 12th day of Christmas, a tradition many still keep Houses were once decorated with large amounts of Holly, which was saved and burned in the fires to make pancakes for Shrove Tuesday In some parts of Ireland, mothers would rub the tail of a herring across their children’s eyes, which was said to prevent disease for a year At midnight on Little Christmas, it was said that all the well water in Ireland would turn to wine … but if you tried to observe it or taste it, it would bring you terribly bad luck It was also believed that animals could speak like people on Christmas Eve, but to observe it would curse you On Little Christmas Day, candles made from rushes taken from the bogs would be named for each member of the house and lit. If your candle burned out first, it was believed you were the next to die But by the middle of the 20th Century, most of these Irish traditions were forgotten, but Women’s Christmas has been revived Many cafés, restaurants, and hotels offer special ladies afternoons and evenings with Prosecco If you come to study in Ireland, you’ll have the chance to learn all about Ireland’s colourful culture and history. If you are already here, welcome back from your holiday break and good luck to you in 2022!
