This time, five years ago, Grangegorman's oldest building - the Lower House - remained in a state of dereliction, open to the elements. Its award winning restoration commenced just a few months later and the historic building now has a new life as a hub of student activities for TU Dublin. It is the last remaining range of the original quadrangle complex, built circa 1812 to the designs of Francis Johnston, who also designed the Richmond Penitentiary (now the Clock Tower building) and the GPO.
The Lower House opened as the Richmond Lunatic Asylum in 1815 and was one of the first public psychiatric hospitals in the country. The building had a long history of mental healthcare before falling into dereliction in the late 1980s.
Today, the Lower House is home to a wide variety of student spaces including the Students' Union, sports studios, a restaurant, dance studios, music practice rooms and workspaces.
These images show the before and after of some of these spaces.

Throwback to the recent launch of 'THE GOLDEN BANDSTAND - Sculpture' by artist Garrett Phelan that took place two weeks ago!
As part of '...the lives we live' Grangegorman Public Art, this stunning artwork is now a proud testament to our vibrant community and its ever-evolving story. The event was a resounding success, with Paul's Third Class students from Dublin 7 Educate Together National School having the honour of being the first official performers in the space. They were followed by the mesmerising Sean Hession 'Frankly Sinatra' and the energetic Clash Jam Wallop. GDA CEO Ger Casey, Interim TU Dublin President John Doran and Prof. Ciarán Benson opened the event.
Garrett Phelan, artist behind the artwork said at the launch: ‘THE GOLDEN BANDSTAND – Sculpture’ connects the transformation of the Grangegorman site as a centre for new models for creative education and community activity. I have created the sculpture to respectfully acknowledge the past, fully embrace the present and act as a positive contemporary work of art for creative engagement and collective escapism into the future for everyone.”
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us on this special day and to all those who had a hand in the sculpture successfully coming to fruition!

A few days on we're still thinking about the wonderful Stoneybatter Festival last weekend!
The GDA was proud to sponsor the event this year as well as take part in a few of the events. We had some great discussions at the Eco-Hub which provided a fantastic opportunity to engage and learn about initiatives focused on environmental and climate action in D7.
We were also thrilled to see the Grangegorman Histories walking tours featured as a key highlight in the Saturday event programme. Both tours were fully booked out and were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by and participated! Special thanks to Stoneybatter Festival for providing a platform that fosters community connections and celebrates the rich cultural heritage and inclusive spirit of this area.

Check out this piece in the latest Dublin Inquirer that talks about Grangegorman's less well known transportation history.
Dianne Snowden and Joan Kavanagh are currently exploring a public database project as part of that documents the 3,200 convict women and their children who were held in what's now Grangegorman's Clock Tower building before being transported to Tasmania.
