🌟 Introduction to Lunches 🌟

As summer draws to a close and children and teenagers return to school, it’s time to get back into routine. This means planning meals and snacks to ensure those carefree summer days don’t turn into unhealthy autumn and winter habits!

School lunches don’t have to be dull. With a bit of creativity and variety, you can make lunchtime both exciting and nutritious. Aim for a balanced meal by including something from each of these food groups: starchy carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, protein, and dairy. Add a drink of milk or water, and you’re set for a healthy, balanced lunch.

Let’s make lunchtime enjoyable and nourishing! 🍎🥪

🚰 Stay Hydrated, Stay Healthy!

During exercise, particularly in warm weather, we lose a lot of fluid through sweating. If we don't replace these fluids, dehydration can occur, leading to fatigue and feeling unwell. To keep our bodies in top condition, aim to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water or other fluids each day.

🌞 Warm weather and increased activity often naturally make us drink more. However, as we age, our sense of thirst can diminish, so it's important to stay mindful of hydration.

💧 Watch out for signs of dehydration:

Headaches
Irritability
Constipation
Dry skin or cracked lips
💡 Pro Tip: Get into the habit of sipping fluids throughout the day, after meals, and between activities.

Some of our team's favourites? Herbal tea, iced water with lemon, and a splash of MiWadi 0%! 💧🍋

Beans and cheese baked potato🤤

This is a tasty alternative to sandwiches for lunch. Baked potatoes are versatile and you can add your own favourite filling. A serving of beans count towards your 5 a day and are also a good source of low fat protein and fibre.

Try to use low fat cheese as suggested in this recipe as ordinary cheddar is high in saturated fat. We need 3 servings of calcium a day, and cheese in this recipe counts as one of these servings.

Carbohydrate: Potatoes contain carbohydrates so they will have an effect on glucose levels, read at the nutrition label to see total carbohydrate content. Choose a smaller sized potato if you need to lose weight.

Ingredients – Serves 2 Adults

2 large potatoes, scrubbed not peeled
1 x 225g / 8 oz. small can of baked beans
55g / 2 oz. of low-fat cheddar cheese, grated
Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 220°C / 425°F / Gas Mark 7
Wash the potatoes and then prick them all over with a fork
Bake in a pre-heated oven for 1½ hours or until the inside is tender
Heat the baked beans in a saucepan on the hob or in the microwave according to instructions on the tin
Cut the potato in half and carefully scoop the centre out of the potato
Mix this potato with the baked beans and pepper
Return the mixture to potato skin and sprinkle with grated cheese
Place in a hot oven and bake until warmed through and golden

🌟Family Fun Day in Mayo🌟

The recently formed Mayo Parents of Type1 Diabetes Support Committee got off to a great start at their first event on Saturday 20th July.

A Family Fun Day took place at Graune Pet Farm where 14 families came together for a very enjoyable afternoon.

The venue opened early for the event to allow families to relax & meet each other in the knowledge everyone there was in the same boat.

Friendships were formed, new connections were made & experiences and tips were shared.

Above all the children had the best fun. It was a huge success.

Watch this space to see what their next event will be….
