After 36 years of serving Dundalk’s late-night revellers - and a decade after it first rolled into Oriel Park - the Sing Li Van has been put out to pasture.
A weekend fixture at The Square for many years, the van went on to become part of the match night experience at Oriel Park after its arrival in 2013, serving Dundalk fans with the finest curry chip in the League of Ireland.
The onset of COVID-19 interrupted the van’s stay but after a couple of fleeting appearances towards the end of 2021, it made its triumphant return at the beginning of last season.
The 2023 campaign proved to be its last with Owen Fee confirming that himself and fellow Sing Li co-owner Gerry King have decided to bring the curtain down on its long reign.
“We’ve had 36 years of long nights and costs are rising all of the time so we’ve taken the decision to call it quits,” Owen told dundalkfc.com.
“We leave with great memories. The van almost became part of the furniture at Oriel and John Murphy used to call that part of the ground the ‘Sing Li corner’ on his Dundalk FM commentary,” he laughed.
“We would like to thank all of the staff who helped us over the years, both in town and at Oriel, and all of the customers and supporters we served on weekends and match nights.
“The good thing about the van going into retirement is that we can actually watch the home games now without having to worry about work. I bought my season ticket this week so I’m really looking forward to the UCD game on February 17th now!”
The van may be riding into the sunset but Owen said that Sing Li would still be available to the people of Dundalk and further afield.
“We’ve been making our curry sauce and paste since 1984 and even though the van is gone, we are still 100% focussed on keeping that going,” he said.
Everyone at the club would like to thank Owen, Gerry and all of the Sing Li staff for the service they provided and we wish them all the best in the future.
