Something random from the beautiful 12th century cathedral town, Chichester.
The City Council’s Coat of Arms was granted by Royal Patent in 1570. The Coat of Arms is officially described as “Argent gutte-de-sang, on a chief gules a lion passant guardant or” or more simply, “Silver with red drops, a straight line not indented, with leopard of England”.
How this Coat of Arms arrived here at Bookstop Ennis, we don't know but if anyone from Sussex or in connection with would like one, we have it on sale in our book shop.
Hand written letters are a true treasure indeed. This one is from Vincent Van Gough to his brother. 💕

W. B. Yeats died in France on 28 January 1939, 85 years ago. His dad, John Yeats, sketched him when he was born, 159 years ago
When asked "Where do you get your strength from?" Roger Waters replies, "his mother." At 13 years of age when she observed he was struggling with something, she told him that "life brings many moments, with knotty situations and to know what to do, you must read, read everything you can regard your question and then read some more.. And when you have read everything you can... do the right thing." this is what the children should be taught, he says, to do the right thing. ❤️

Benjamin Zephaniah. 15 April 1958 – 7 December 2023)
Respect.
Biography - Benjamin Zephaniah Dr Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah was born and raised in Birmingham, England. He cannot remember a time when he was not creating poetry but this had nothing to do with school where poetry meant very little to him, in fact he had finished full time education at the age of 13. His poetry is strongly...
The British - Benjamin Zephaniah, Handsworth.
Take some Picts, Celts and Silures
And let them settle,
Then overrun them with Roman conquerors.
Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years
Add lots of Norman French to some
Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously.
Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans,
Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese,
Vietnamese and Sudanese.
Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians
And Pakistanis,
Combine with some Guyanese
And turn up the heat.
Sprinkle some fresh Indians, Malaysians, Bosnians,
Iraqis and Bangladeshis together with some
Afghans, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish, Japanese
And Palestinians
Then add to the melting pot.
Leave the ingredients to simmer.
As they mix and blend allow their languages to flourish
Binding them together with English.
Allow time to be cool.
Add some unity, understanding, and respect for the future,
Serve with justice
And enjoy.
Note: All the ingredients are equally important. Treating one ingredient better than another will leave a bitter unpleasant taste.
Warning: An unequal spread of justice will damage the people and cause pain. Give justice and equality to all.
"Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain."
Bob Dylan. (An Excerpt from Masters of War song lyrics.)

Chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Dan George was a Poet, Author and Activist. He was born July 24 1899 and passed Sept 23 1981. We are sharing his poem ''My Heart Soars,'' on his birthday month. His words resonate with us here in Ireland also.
My Heart Soars
The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.
The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.
The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,
speaks to me.
The strength of fire,
the taste of salmon,
the trail of the sun,
And the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.
And my heart soars
Chief Dan George
William Somerset Maugham: "The crown of literature is poetry." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation."
Robert Louis Stevenson: "The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean."
“Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o’clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.”
― Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
Absolutely agree. We are gutted here at the bookshop to hear of so many of our greatest stories, intended to be newly released edited with characters reconstructed, in order to comply with contemporary times. We are collecting first prints and all the classics here at Bookstop. I think the old prints are a blessing to us now as the historical context, the social and political themes and the very occurrences, in place at the time these books were written, are crucial to our understanding of the writer, and the times the author was writing in . Why steal history? Why conceal someone's truth? These are scary times indeed!
History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It's not yours to erase. It belongs to all of us.

7 Foods That Resemble the Body Parts They Are Good For According to a common theory that dates from the Middle Ages, plants resemble the parts of the body that they help heal. The idea is outdated today but you can still use it as a fun mnemonic device that will help you remember what kind of foods you can eat if you want to have a healthier body functi...
Emily Brontë: ‘I can say with sincerity that I love cats; furthermore I am going to give very good reasons why those who hate them are wrong.’
Who knew that, as well as writing one of the most remarkable novels of the Victorian era, Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë (1818-48) also wrote an essay titled ‘The Cat’? It is from this essay that the above quotation about cats is taken.
I took a speed-reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia.
