Dahlia ‘Tartan’ still in full bloom in our herbaceous border!
The Winged Horses; Gleaming in autumn sunshine and one of the most striking features of the Italian garden is the pair of life - sized winged horses which watch over Triton lake.
Made of zinc, they form part of the family coat of arms.
They were created by Professor Hugo Hagen in Berlin in 1869.

On Sunday the “Future of Trees” will take center stage with world renowned horticulturist and Keeper of the Queens Gardens (Windsor Estate) John Anderson on a panel with Seamus O’Brien from the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland (Kilmacurragh), Margie Phillips (Teagasc) and Faith Wilson (ecologist). This discussion will see the panelists outline the key challenges, innovative solutions and good news stories centered on protecting trees into the future.

Book a morning walk from 10 – 11.30 am with Alex Slazenger – Head Gardener at Powerscourt Estate, Seamus O’Brien – Head Gardener at the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland Kilmacurragh or a tree ecology walk with ecologist Faith Wilson.

The afternoon panel discussion on “Future of Trees” is hosted by broadcaster Catherine Cleary of “Pocket Forests”. Catherine will interview and curate a panel with the following wonderful speakers –

Amaryllis belladonna. (Jersey lily.)
Native to South Africa, this autumn flowering bulbous perennial produces umbels of funnel shaped scented pink flowers.
It has received the RHS AGM - (Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.)
Here it is growing against the sheltered walls of the walled garden and is in full bloom right now 🌸
Actaea simplex (Atropurpurea Group) - Baneberry.
An early autumn blooming perennial with dense spikes of small fragrant white flowers and deep purple stems and foliage.
It is a designated “Plant for Pollinators” by the RHS.
Here is has attracted the Red Admiral butterfly in the herbaceous border.
Dahlia ‘Strawberry Ice’ continues to bloom in the herbaceous border along with 30 other varieties of dahlia.

The Shaking Bog Festival returns to Enniskerry and the Glencree Valley with an inspiring programme celebrating art and nature.
Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) in full bloom in the circular beds in the walled garden. The integrity of the sweat pea is maintained by willow domes made on-site.
The Comma butterfly (hutchinsoni form)
Often found in gardens taking nectar from flowers; Here it is taking nectar from the tiny star-shaped pink flowers of Sedum spectabile (Ice plant) in the herbaceous border.
This plant is extremely popular with both butterflies and bees and has therefore been designated a “Plant for Pollinators” by the RHS.
It has also received the RHS Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM).
Plenty to see and experience in late summer at Powerscourt 🌺
Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) in full bloom in the circular beds in the walled garden.
There is beautiful delicate perfume scent wafting through the warm air on these late summer days.
Eucryphia cordifolia. (Ulmo.)
A specimen tree, native to Chile.
Grown for its beautiful foliage and flowers, it is evergreen, roughly columnar in shape and grows to approximately 15 metres (50 ft) tall.
It produces saucer-shaped fragrant white flowers from late summer to autumn.
It is in full bloom right now located just beyond the Dolphin pond, at the end of the long walk.
