Pinikay Logs, what don’t they do? 🤔

We’re always talking about the things our products can do. Yet, sometimes, it doesn’t tell the full story, there are also things you shouldn’t expect from them. ⬇️

For example, if you want your Pinikay Logs to produce loads of smoke for dramatic effect, don’t buy them, they’re smokeless. 🚭

If you want to show off in front of people by throwing wood into the fire every hour or so, don’t bother buying them, they’re far too energy-efficient. ⚡️

Here are a few tips for ensuring you get maximum flavour from your grilled goodness 😋

1⃣️ Never use lighter fluid or kerosene, they will make your food taste like chemicals. We recommend using our Waxie Firelighters or newspaper with a touch of vegetable or rapeseed oil for best results ✅

2⃣️ Create “heat zones” in your grill to keep things even. To do this, avoid having lit lumpwood under every inch of the grill, use the centre as the hottest area for quick cooking and the perimeters to slow things down 🔥

3⃣️ Pay attention to how you arrange your lumpwood in your grill. Avoid grouping masses of irregularly shaped lumps as this will block airflow and stifle heat, good airflow gives you more from your bag 📈

Hometree 🤝 Ecofuel

Did you know that thousands of years ago, over 80% of Ireland’s surface was covered in trees? For perspective, that figure now stands at around 11%, one of the lowest figures in the EU 😥

That’s why we have joined up with Hometree, a fantastic bunch who are committed to restoring 4,000 acres of Ireland’s native rainforests, one acre at a time 🌳

For our part, we’re adopting 2 acres before our business year ends in summer, and we hope to take on a little more each year 📈

As we grow, the forest grows and our contributions compound year after year. Within 5 years, we hope to already see early signs of our contributions as the woodlands begin to regenerate 🌱

Starting small but thinking big 🧠

We often get asked what we have done to reduce our carbon emissions and ensure that we live up to the ‘Eco’ part of our name 🙋

This week, as we draw attention to Earth Day, we have outlined all of the alternatives we have started utilising since cutting out single-use plastics in our packaging back in 2019 ♻️

Where plastic has remained in our operations, we now source biodegradable solutions, it’s a gradual process, but we are always looking for ways to innovate and become even more planet-friendly 🌎

Away from plastic, in 2020 we completely cut out paper in our internal fulfillment and delivery operations by utilising technology that allowed us to streamline the process ▶️

We think it’s important to say that any changes take time, effort and investment, but it always starts with a vision 👀

Once you have that, any change is possible 🌱

Plastic alternatives and why they’re better ✅

We’re sure you’re well aware by now, but Earth Day 2024 is all about collectively reducing our plastic usage 📉

We’ve made the step to cut out single-use plastics from all of our products, with each product requiring its own alternative to ensure it’s right for you 🫵

We’ve already outlined the changes we’ve made to our EcoBriquettes packing this week, but there are plenty of other changes that we’ve made 🔁

For Double deck and Single deck pallets of kiln-dried logs, we designed a cardboard lid to replace the plastic wrap we’d been using 📦

Meanwhile, for our Pinikay logs use a simple recyclable strap instead of the industry-standard plastic shrink wraps ♻️

All of these changes have collectively made a huge impact, but we are still striving to do more, that’s our promise to you 🌳

Our single-plastic usage reduction, by the numbers 📉

In line with Earth Day’s aim to cut single-use plastic usage down by 60% by 2040, we thought we’d break down what we have done to help reach this ambitious yet achievable target 🎯

In 2019, we completely eliminated single-use plastic packaging from all of our products, after some pretty big changes we had already made in the years before that 🙅

For example, for our Eco Briquettes, we replaced shrink-wrap plastic with beautifully designed cardboard boxes that can be reused by consumers or recycled ♻️

Since making the change, we’ve cut down on 100,000 meters squared, or 6.5 Croke Parks, of single-use plastic wrap from our EcoBriquettes alone 🏟️

If every other business did the same, we wouldn’t be doing too badly ☀️
