Irish singer, songwriter and electronic music producer Rory Hall—better known as Proper Micro NV —releases his sophomore album Microsaurus along with the music video for ‘Who else?’ via Strange Brew today (link in bio)

Hall celebrates the release with a show at Limerick’s Record Room on Friday, 18th October with The JLB (from Kero Kero Bonito). Tickets are €10 + fees and available here .

Hall says of Microsaurus : “I’ve been working on a new album for about five years or so. Microsaurus feels as right as it’s ever going to feel. It’s 11 tracks but it could have easily been about 30. I have to admit that I found it quite hard to trim everything down and let certain songs go, but that’s that. It’s truly the record I have always wanted to make—a big, electro-pop type of album.

“I really hope people like it and get something from it—an emotion, a reaction, a dance, a feeling.”

I can’t believe you haven’t seen...
THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
Wednesday 30 October / Pálás Cinema
Free can of White Hag

“To a new world of gods and monsters!”

So intones Dr. Praetorious to Dr. Henry Frankenstein, toasting their new friendship with a glass of gin (“my only weakness”) before proposing a partnership. He unveils a series of miniature living humans, each in its own bell jar: Homunculi, he says, which point the way to full-scale experiments in the creation of life. “Alone,” he tells Frankenstein, “you have created a man. Now, together, we will create his mate.”

Their quest forms the inspiration for James Whale‘s “The Bride of Frankenstein” (1935), the best of the Frankenstein movies–a sly, subversive work that smuggled shocking material past the censors by disguising it in the trappings of horror. Some movies age; others ripen. Seen today, Whale’s masterpiece is more surprising than when it was made because today’s audiences are more alert to its buried hints of homosexuality, necrophilia and sacrilege. But you don’t have to deconstruct it to enjoy it; it’s satirical, exciting, funny, and an influential masterpiece of art direction.

Houseplants are coming to Róisín Dubh on the 27th of December, tickets on sale this Friday at 10am.

HousePlants is the project of producer Daithí & Paul Noonan (Bell X1).

The sophomore album, Half Known Things, arrives in October 2024. It promises the same blend of optimism and driving rhythms that have come to define them—music that pulses with hope, created by two artists who find power in collaboration and connection, always with an eye on the dancefloor.

HousePlants have been touring as a 5-piece live band, playing All Together Now and Beyond the Pale festivals among others, and opening for Chic and Leftfield.

In a densely overpopulated, starving New York City of the future, NYPD detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) investigates the murder of an executive at rations manufacturer Soylent Corporation. With the help of elderly academic Solomon “Sol” Roth (Edward G. Robinson), Thorn begins to make real progress — until the governor mysteriously pulls the plug. Obsessed with the mystery, Thorn steps out from behind the badge and launches his own investigation into the murder.

Galway garage rockers Shark School ‘Choose Life’ with their raucous new single, out on Wednesday, 25th September via Strange Brew, available for pre-order on limited edition 7” now (link in bio). The four-piece release the track just before taking Dublin by storm with their Ireland Music Week show on Friday, 4th October in the Workman’s Cellar at 11:10pm.

Tongue-in-cheek yet cathartic, Shark School jolt themselves out of the doldrums with head-banging guitar on ‘Choose Life’ and order anyone within earshot to “Stop wasting away on your mind numbing sh*t.”
The band tell listeners: “Hey there, are you looking to make a decision? Well boy does Shark School have the answer for you! ‘Choose Life’ is a journey through the depths of space and time and into the realm of girl garage. Designed to make you laugh, cry and go, ‘Hmmmm that was lovely,’ this song will have you nodding your head in approval so hard that you’ll wake up with whiplash.”

Nora Staunton (guitar, vocals), Peggy Ford (bass), Meg Bruce (percussion, backing vocals) and Cathal Curran (drums) formed Shark School in June of 2023 and have quickly made a name for themselves playing with celebrated Irish acts, including NewDad, The Love Buzz, Elaine Malone and many more. The group have played at the festivals Beyond The Pale, All Together Now, Electric Picnic, Whelan’s Ones to Watch and Fall Right Into Place, as well as touring all over Ireland and in the UK. They are known for their energetic sets, punctuated by their sarcastic wit.

I can’t believe you haven’t seen....Pulp Fiction
30th Anniversary

Wednesday 28 August - 8.30pm - Pálás Cinema
Includes a free can of White Hag
This 30th Anniversary screening celebrates the iconic modern classic, in which the lives of two mob hitmen (John Travolta, Samuel Jackson), a boxer (Bruce Willis), a gangster’s wife (Uma Thurman), and a pair of diner bandits (Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer) intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. Pulp Fiction soldified Tarantino’s career as one of the great new directors of the nineties and won the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.

Maria Kelly is back with us this week, and tells us about a Niamh Regan song she loves, and there’s a new album on the way, which is great. I also listened to songs on shuffle in the car, and I got The Magnetic Fields followed by Belle & Sebastian, so that was great so have a listen
