The TULCA Festival of Visual Arts opens today! Join us at Galway Arts Centre, where we’re thrilled to present works by John Carson and Michael Holly as part of the TULCA programme.
The Salvage Agency, explores the potential of art to impact contemporary ecology and environmental action. Curator Michele Horrigan notes, "Galway, on the edge of the northeast Atlantic, is a unique location for a heightened awareness of what’s at stake. Explorations of landscape, seascape and nature, public space, colonial history, political structures, the industrial complex, and folk narratives are all pertinent. These are paths taken by our collective society in shaping today’s world and a contemporary Europe. Can art create an undercurrent of improvisation and frugality, haphazard formality, and change to offer new perspectives, provocations, and empathy? From the wreckage, can art nourish a new reality?”

TULCA Festival of Visual Arts presents its 22nd edition, The Salvage Agency, curated by Michele Horrigan, from 1–17 November. This year’s festival unfolds across multiple Galway venues, including here at Galway Arts Centre, showcasing works by John Carson and Michael Holly.
Recognised as the west of Ireland’s key contemporary art festival, TULCA connects Galway’s art institutions, cultural spaces, and public realms in an annual celebration of compelling Irish and international art that speaks to our times.

We are delighted to announce our next instalment of Disquiet Nights Late-Night Series this November with RÓIS ✨
Hailing from Fermanagh, RÓIS (pronounced RAW-sh) is a composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and electronic artist who breathes new life into a forgotten Ireland. Her genre-bending sound blends elements of folk, sean-nós, electronics, and jazz harmony, transporting listeners into a captivating sound world where the ancient meets the new.
Expect twists and turns of tempo and genre, and moments of sheer magic, as she conducts the energy of the room. This is a place where the ancient meets the new. RÓIS’ ethereal voice has been compared to the likes of Björk, Meredith Monk and Hatis Noit. It is a vocal style rooted in traditional sean-nós singing, as she summons the dead and forgotten, with ancient ‘keenin songs. With RÓIS’ performances, the old and the new are enmeshed, alongside encapsulating visuals, in the hope of creating good art. Leading audiences into a realm of mysticism and creating a space for introspection, these live experiences are completely unique.

Galway Arts Centre is thrilled to announce the next workshop as part of our Artist Development Series organised by curator and writer Iarlaith Ní Fheorais: Socially Engaged Practice with Joselle Ntumba.
We look forward to welcoming artist and cultural programmer Joselle Ntumba for this hands-on workshop where Joselle will share her unique approach to curating and developing socially engaged practices. Drawing on her experience with projects like Éireann and I (a digital repository documenting Black migrant life in Ireland), she will present her methods for ethically working with communities to co-create meaningful projects.
The second half of the workshop will be a practical session, where participants will design their own socially engaged project, focusing on key stakeholders, ethical concerns, and effective methodologies.
Joselle Ntumba is a black cultural programmer. Her work centres on autonomous modes of black cultural production, community learning, and research. Informed by black feminist thought, her work seeks to create sites of rupture that allow for generative possibilities of seeing and subverting systems of enclosure that permeate her ways of being. She is currently working on Eireann and I, an archive of black migrant life and Sistren Space, an educational hub and curatorial platform. Éireann and I is a digital repository which documents the lives of Black migrants in Ireland. Éireann and I is also a migrant memory project, programming events and discussions about community archives, memory work, and agency and autonomy within the public record. It is co-developed by curator and researcher, Beulah Ezeugo and cultural programmer Joselle Ntumba.
