Loop Head Alpacas; a little taste of heaven on earth...
We, Valerie & Billy Leonard, bought our farm on Loop Head back in 2015 and were welcomed and settled in straight away. Originally from Co. Armagh we were living in Co. Derry until our youngest ‘flew the nest’. We then bought 3 alpacas, Macho, Mammy and her cria Cosimo and bred our herd gradually over the years, currently 12, 4 females 4 males, 3 yearlings and 1 male cria this year. We rescued the beautiful Cleo from Burren Rescue a few years back and so now we have 4 horses. Add the dogs and the cats and we have a nice little gang about!
Valerie started spinning the fleece a few years back now and is an active member of the Mid West group of Spinners Weavers & Dyers Guild. Natural dyeing with plants from the fields and hedges followed and of course the natural progression was to get a loom and do some weaving. This is all available for you to try out in our alpaca experiences and of course you will see a demo. Workshops are planned for all these activities as and when time allows.
We love the community spirit out in West Clare and are active in the Ciorcal Cainte & set dancing in Carraigaholt. Valerie also has a small Irish language Greeting card business which helps provide for local demand in the area. Check out www.smaointe.com or the cards in Carraigaholt Post Office
So it was a natural progression for us to open our alpaca farm for visits, mostly due to requests and interest in these ‘strange’ animals. People of all ages are amazed to hear all about them, their fleece and what we do in our circular economy. We are inter-dependent; we depend on our animals for fleece (and income from visits) and they depend on us to keep them healthy and happy. We also depend on you, the visitor, as your contribution helps the costs of running this alpaca farm and for that we are grateful. Slán go fóill xx
