Rothe House and Gardens is the midpoint of the medieval mile
Built between 1594 and 1610, this was the home of the renowned merchant, landowner and Mayor of Kilkenny City, John Rothe Fitz Piers, his wife Rose Archer, and their eleven children.
The Rothe Family, along with less than a dozen other wealthy families, controlled Kilkenny’s trade and dominated its civic government from the late Middle Ages until the 17th Century.
John Rothe built three houses on this narrow plot – one behind the other. The first house was completed in 1594 and this is where he carried out his business as a merchant and lived upstairs with his wife, Rose Archer and their family. 🏦
As the family grew he built a second house in 1604. The third house, completed 1610, included a kitchen on the ground floor with a large hearth and bake oven, as well as additional rooms on the first and second floors.
Behind the third house are the gardens which ran all the way to the city walls and contained an orchard, herb and vegetable gardens, a dovecote, a well and a summer house.
In 1962 Rothe House was bought by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society as the headquarters of the Society and as a place to exhibit its collection of artifacts to the public.

One of the oldest inns in Ireland, Kytelers dates back to 1324. Since it was first established by the notorious Dame Alice de Kyteler in the 13th century.
The original owner of this Inn was Dame Alice le Kyteler whom was born in Kilkenny. In her time she gained much notoriety not least because she acquired four husbands and a considerable fortune. Her enemies eventually conspired to accuse her of witchcraft and have her burned at the stake. It is now generally accepted that the charges against Dame Alice and her associates were trumped up but what is on record as been certainly true is that Kyteler’s Inn was “a place of merrymaking and good cheer.
Today its menu maintains the proud tradition of Irish cooking. In 1986 Kytelers Inn was acquired by its present owner, Nicky Flynn, who set about reviving it as a place of good food and drink, entertainment and traditional Irish hospitality. Within Kytelers there are several bars, including the Main Bar, Tavern Bar, Courtyard and Top Bar.
Did you know all this about Kytlers??
