It seems that the banning of books is back in vogue in the United States and sure to spread its reach through the Internet across the world. In the past few weeks books entirely diverse in range have been removed from school libraries in Texas, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Among them, Maus, “The Bluest Eyes” by Toni Morrison, “The Perks of being a wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini and “A Court of Mist and Fury” by Sarah J Mass. That’s a graphic novel retelling the holocaust, a classic by a Nobel prize winner, a coming-of-age novel, a novel about afghan life and a fantasy.

Currently, the following well known books are among the most challenged by threats of censorship and banning;
• Of Mice and Men
• To Kill a Mockingbird
• The Catcher in the Rye
• The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
• The Colour Purple
• Harry Potter
• Brave New World
• The Bible
• 1984
• One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest
• Lord of the Flies
• The Great Gatsby

In 1998, just as his behemoth was beginning to shutdown bookshops across the world, Jeff Bezos said; “We want to make every book available—the good, the bad and the ugly. Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable.”

Now that it controls the market and most opposite is gone, Amazon has changed its tune. “Amazon has a First Amendment right to pick and choose the materials they offer. Despite its size, it does not have to sponsor speech it finds unacceptable."

Now the list of books banned from Amazon and their many online minions is growing by the day. The problem is when Amazon bans a book, that book is essentially removed from existence.

“When a company controls over 83% of the market for books, it begins the process of deleting ideas from a society.”

As it stands, book banning is restricted to the school library system in certain American states, and to alternative political tracts online, but how long will it be until Amazon or another giant decides to remove books like the ones above, books that carry such inspiring ideas, from existence?

Independent bookstores don’t ban books. We believe it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable. We think that banning books is one step away from burning them, and, as the great German poet Heinrich Heine once prophesied, “Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.”

To combat these regressive steps, we are introducing a new banned books section in Red Books where books that are currently, or have been in the past, banned will be available for sale at low prices for as long as our doors stay open.

We will also be starting a new video series where we will discuss these endangered books and promote their values.

Let us know what your favourite banned book is and why, and tell us what you think about the banning of the books above!

Bookselling Ireland has called for bookshops to be reclassified as "essential services" and reopened. The organisation said that the survival of the bookselling sector in Ireland is very much at risk, and the loss of bookshops would be devastating for individuals and local communities.

France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and other countries have already declared bookselling an essential service, highlighting the benefits to mental health and culture that such spaces provide. Today the town was full of people but a small independent bookstore like ours wasn't even allowed to offer click&collect while much bigger shops which attract much bigger crowds remain open.

We are still posting new books every single day to our website www.theirishbookshop.com.
