Today we celebrate early 7th century Saint Mocheallóg whom our town is named after. The town's name derives from the Irish Mo a form of endearment, Cill meaning cell and óg means young. He built a church on the hill overlooking the town so "the church of Mocheallóg".

The town was of considerable importance in the late medieval period, ranking as one of the main urban areas in Ireland at the time. The Collegiate Church of St Peter and St Paul was built by 1241.

Kilmallock is located in a position of strategic importance, equidistant from Tipperary, Mallow in Cork and Limerick City which meant it frequently became a target during times of war. In 1571, the town was burned by the rebel Earl of Desmond during the Desmond Rebellions. Seventy years later, during the Irish Confederate Wars, the Dominican Priory of Kilmallock was attacked and destroyed by a Parliamentary Army the ruins of which are visited by so many. Happy feast day to you all, you are very welcome to our town anytime.

A LIMERICK GEM!

You'll find Kilmallock Friary in County Limerick, unsurprisingly in the town of Kilmallock. Settlement here began around 600 AD when St Mocheallóg founded a monastery on a hill a mile outside the current town. It was that monastery which gave the town its name; in Irish it's 'Cill Mocheallóg' which means the Church of Mocheallóg.

By the Middle Ages Kilmallock was a thriving, Anglo-Norman walled town and the friary was built in 1291 when the Dominicans were invited to establish a monastery here.

The monastery was dissolved in 1541 during a time when Henry VIII of England was disbanding all monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland.

The monks returned here to Kilmallock in 1622 but less than 30 years later, in 1648, it was attacked by Cromwell's troops. Two monks were put to death in front of the altar. Despite that the monks continued to live and work here, often under threat of religious persecution, until the 1790s when the friary was finally abandoned.

The extensive ruins you see today contain a number of fascinating architectural features which make it well worth exploring; the five-light window in the south transept, for example, is one of the most exquisite in Ireland.

Kilmallock town itself is one of Ireland’s best-preserved walled towns containing a wealth of stunning Medieval buildings and features so do visit if you find yourself in County Limerick. 🥰
