Iconic Tee Shots Every Golfer Hopes to Someday Hit - LINKS Magazine I’ve selected a trio of iconic tee shots from par threes, fours, and fives that are likely to be at or near the top of many golfers’ lists.

Ron Kirby (1933-2023)

It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of Ron Kirby, the golf course architect who joined John O’Connor in his vision and interpreted it into the final design of the spectacular Old Head Golf Links that was to become their incredible legacy.

Born in Beverley, MA, where his father was a golf professional, Ron had his heart set on a career in greenkeeping and took a course in agronomy at the University of Massachusetts. In the snowbound winter months, he would travel to Florida and it was there that he started to gain valuable experience in working for a variety of golf architects.

Ron’s talent was such that he was soon working with the likes of Robert Trent Jones Snr, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.

It was while acting as senior designer alongside Nicklaus on his Mount Juliet project in Ireland that Ron met Joe Carr, the most talented amateur golfer in the history of golf and a long-time friend of Jack, together with his son Roddy and from whom he first heard of what they described simply as the most spectacular headland near Cork. It was a few years later, in 1994, that Ron and his wife Sally would see Old Head for the first time and, together with the O’Connor brothers, an exceptional team of individuals - and with the fortune of a million stars aligning - they set about creating their masterpiece.

While Ron’s talents are there to be admired through a number of superior designs and golf courses across the globe, Ireland and Old Head formed a very special place in the hearts of Ron and his beautiful wife of 67 years, who sadly passed away in 2020. Their home-from-home away from Palm Beach, they had already agreed that it was there that they wished to be together for eternity and where Ron will now join Sally within a beautiful memorial created at their choosing - beside the ancient lighthouses of the 6th hole, All Points.

“The world of golf and the world in general has lost a very special human being, but one who has left a legacy that will last forever in terms of what he created and what he stood for as a person. Both he and Sally have been very much a part of the O’Connor and Old Head family for decades and we have shared so many wonderful memories together. He will be so sadly missed but will live on in our hearts together with the beautiful Sally, two incredible people who we are so fortunate to have known and to have loved. May he rest in peace.”

The second edition of the Hospitality Golf Classic @ Old Head Golf Links in association with Craft Irish Whiskey and Young Chef Young Waiter. Welcoming world famous Chefs including Galton Blackiston, Ricki Weston, Graham Neville, Mike Tweedie and this years deserving winner Kinsale's very own Paul McDonald of the fantastic restaurant Bastion. All were suitably wowed by the stunning headland and golf course of Old Head Golf Links as well as the truly exceptional dining provided by our own Chefs Lee Kennedy, Tom Heiden and team as well as David Rice of the incredible Ballinacurra House. Thank you to great friend and President of The Restaurant Association Robert Walton MBE and Sean Valentine for creating this wonderful event that we were delighted to host.
