The rock names that restricted Portnablagh Pier
In the 19th century every fishman knew the names of the rocks and gaps around Portnablagh Pier. This was more out of necessity due to the danger these areas posed to boats accessing the pier.
Portnablagh Pier was built in 1849 and is one of the finest in the county. However, access to the pier was not so fine. Eventually improvements were made and with it these old fastidious names were lost.
The main problem was a low rock known locally as the ‘Sound Rock’ which lay across the access into the harbour between ‘Long Rock’ and ‘Black Rocks’. This made the passage into the harbour very narrow and dangerous even for small boats.
When the pier was built, the Board of Public Works had considered removing this rock, but never did. A report in 1894 later states, “There is a solid quay, built many years ago out of relief funds, it protects a deep little bay, but the rocks at the mouth of the harbour render in entirely impracticable, as no ship, not even the smallest, can safely enter the harbour. A little money – a few hundred pounds – spent in blasting the rocks at the mouth of the Port-na-blagh, would be money [well] spent at present, and would give Dunfanaghy and the adjoining district of Creeslough the means of sea transit which they require.” (Pall Mall Gazette, Nov 1894).
Another issue highlighted by fishermen was a hazardous gap in the rocks behind the pier called the ‘Little Sound’. During storms, this gap caused the sea to flow quickly into the harbour area.
It was a letter by James Boyle to the Board of Public Works in January 1901 that seemed to get the ball finally rolling. In it he made five requests for improving accessibility to the pier:
1. The removal of the ‘Sound Rock’.
2. The closing of the ‘Little Sound’.
3. The placing of perches on the ‘Long’ and ‘Black’ rocks.
4. The provision of a curing station, and
5. (When funds permit) a sufficient extension of the pier due to the inaccessibility of the pier at low tides.
When enough fuss was made, Mr Wyndham (Chief Secretary of Ireland) visited the pier in September 1901 and works began soon after. On 5th September 1902, Portnablagh harbour reopened with some of the requests actioned. The submerged rocks were removed that had previously prevented coasting steamers from gaining access to the pier, and two posts (same place as today) were erected on Long and Black rocks - as seen in this photo from around 1910.
Some decades later a breakwater was built on top of the Black Rocks that surrounded the small gap. The harbour still seen today behind the pier continues to serve as a breakwater to the hazard once posed by the Little Sound.
