UL Shotokan Karate Club
Training Times: Tuesdays 18:15-20:15 Thursdays: 20:00-22:30

Karate was developed in Okinawa prior to its 19th century annexation by Japan. Shotokan is a style of karate, developed and modernised by Gichin Funakoshi, he is credited with popularising karate through a series of demonstrations, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs in mainland Japan. Today Karate is studied all over the world! The name karate-do was formed from the Japane
Hey guys, just for those that aren't aware (apologies for the delay in sharing across our social media's), the club has been shut down for this semester and so there will be no more training. We are working hard to get it back up and running next semester and appreciate your understanding and support.
Again, apologies for the inconvenience, but hopefully we will see you all at training again someday.
Hello everyone, especially to everyone new! We have training tonight from 6 to 8pm in the sports hall in the PESS building. Make sure to wear clothes you would be happy to workout in (ie. no jeans), and bring plenty of water. Whether this is your first time doing karate or not, we look forward to welcoming you to our club later today. We also have training every Thursday from 8 to 10pm, and will hopefully be running some social events throughout the semester too!
Congratulations to some of our amazing members who graded last Saturday and progressed onto the next step in their karate journey! Well done guys, huge achievement and the club is very proud.
Also congratulations to those who competed in Fermoy on Sunday. The results may not have went our way much (except for Seán 👀🥉.... ) , but you are all winners in our eyes. The club is extremely proud of you all, and just remember that if you don't win, you learn. So take the learning experience and apply it to the next outing!
A massive congratulations to everyone who competed at the intervarsities we hosted yesterday, especially our strong UL team which won a selection of medals between them all!
Pictures of the event will hopefully be shared within the next few days.
So, last minute details for tomorrow's intervarsity. It's in the PESS hall across from where we usually train. We are taking registrations from 9am onwards, with the intention to have everyone fully signed in by 9:45, a meeting with captains and refs at 9:50 and begin the competition at 10:00. Hopefully do all kata in the morning and kumite in the afternoon, but depending on how we get through categories we may have some people doing kumite in the morning. There's also a planned lunch break around 12:30/1. Awards ceremony will be after the last event, and there is an after party in the Hurlers pub. And hopefully we will all enjoy ourselves and have a good day. Its either you win or learn! No such thing as losing😂
Less than a week until this 👀. Looking forward to it, and I hope everyone is excited to compete!
Proud to say we are hosting intervarsities this year. Looking forward to it😁
Congratulations to these amazing members who passed their gradings today in Mayfield. Very proud of the commitment and work ethic and consistency this semester, and hope there is plenty more to come!!
Hopefully this can be inspiration to everyone looking to start karate, or looking to grade next semester. Most of the members who graded today only started this semester and have achieved so much in a short time already.
Throwback to two weeks ago when one of our amazing black belt members, Abbey, won her kumite division in the Kanazawa open in Tallaght, Dublin. Congratulations once again, glad to see our members succeeding!
Had some fun after class today demonstrating our skills!
Also, we have secured Dromroe Hall for next week and the week after, at our usual times, so hopefully see a few of you at training through exam season. Best of luck with exams to everyone!!
Great to have Dermot from Pankration MMA club, come down to teach class Tuesday. A great experience and an enjoyable class for all.
Also, good to see strong consistent numbers so late into the semester!
It's never too late to join, if you are interested just request membership on the UL Wolves site, and show up to class either 6 to 8pm on Tuesdays, or 8 to 10pm on Thursdays in the PESS halls.
Class tonight as usual, 8 to 10pm in the PESS hall. See you all there!

The karate club are happy to announce that we will be at the clubs and societies fair tomorrow from 4pm to 7:30pm in the UL Sports Arena! Feel free to pop by and ask us any questions you may have, or even to just talk about karate in general. Looking forward to seeing some new faces in the club this year 😁
We will also have plenty of committee positions available so if this interests you make sure to join the club and express your interest to us. This is a fantastic opportunity which looks amazing on a CV, and can help you develop skills you will use for life.
2nd at All Ireland Intervarsities today in UCD Sports centre. Congratulations to the team that competed, and glad to see so many podium finishes.
Current update from Intervarsities at UCD. Well done to the team so far, making huge impressions for such a relatively inexperienced team. This is the first intervarsities since 2019, and a great moment for the club to be back competing. We are back, and as strong as ever!
Reminder that there is training on tonight at 8pm in PESS as usual. Hope to see you all there, and hopefully you all got the partying out of your system last week. We will be looking ahead to intervarsities soon enough too, and every class counts if you want to compete, so make the most of them!
Happy to announce that Training will resume for the new year from this Thursday the 13th of January! Looking forward to seeing everyone back at karate.
Delighted to be attending the Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa Memorial Seminar with Sensei Ray Payne, and learning something new. What else would you be at on a Sunday morning!
