We had the experience of being owners The Curragh Racecourse on Saturday. What a magical day!

The plans for the Manor House as it exists today were begun in 1832. The house was built to the highest standards of the day by talented local craftspeople, while 2nd Earl of Dunraven and his wife, Lady Caroline Wyndham travelled Ireland, England and continental Europe in search of architectural inspiration.

An example of a rare ‘Calendar House’, Adare Manor is adorned with 365 leaded windows, 52 ornate chimneys, 7 stone pillars and 4 towers to mark the annual tally of days, weeks, and seasons in a year. The Manor House is reminiscent of a chateau, sharing many features of the 19th century Gothic Revival in Britain and Ireland, and drawing inspiration from a romantic view of the chivalric past. The building displays a wealth of gargoyles, heraldry and decorative stone and wood carvings.

Hundreds of years of history, creativity, and care lie behind the magical place we now know as Adare Manor.

Award-winning chef calls on restaurants to stop using 'atrocious' farmed salmon AN award-winning Scottish chef has called on restaurants to join him in refusing to serve farmed salmon.

These are wild salmon. A male guarding a female. I took this image in December above the upper lake in Killarney, some 12 years ago when filming for the early days of Wild Derrynane.

In relation to the ongoing sprat fishing and Salmon farming in Kenmare Bay, people have asked me what not to buy, in connection to stockists that sell salmon around the country... This also goes for online retailers. Here's my list of unstainable salmon products...

any salmon that is sold with 'smoked salmon', 'smoked organic salmon', 'organic smoked salmon', salmon fillets at the fish counter, 'smoked Irish salmon', 'Irish smoked salmon', Scottish salmon, Norwegian salmon... etc etc.. If it doesn't have wild in the title then it's farmed. Remember that 'organic' salmon is farmed. The same goes for salmon on restaurant menus . More than likely when you buy and consume you are supporting a filthy industry (my opinion) that is directly resposible for the demise of wild salmon and seatrout stocks locally and internationally.

If it is wild then it's probably in very short supply. If you are offered wild Atlantic Salmon make sure its is properly tagged if not then it may well have been poached (illegally caught).
