Michael O'Brien for Limerick City and County Council
Michael is a mature student at the University of Limerick studying law. He has worked in the hospitality sector and health and social care regulation.
He has two primary school-aged boys. He is a member of the National Executive Committee of Rabharta.
Vote Dr Laura Keyes for Mayor of Limerick.
Imagine a Limerick where everyone regardless of ability, thrives. Universal design makes this possible.
Universal design means creating spaces and projects that are accessible to all.
When we do, it's not just people with disability that benefit, everyone does.
A wheelchair friendly space is also a buggy friendly space.
As a person with a disability, I know the importance of universal design and if elected mayor I will include it in all council projects.
Tool Libraries operate on the principle of community sharing. They provide access to a wide range of tools that community members can borrow for their projects.
We are living in a time where many people don’t have the security of a “forever home” and often need to move, where people are living in spaces much smaller than required by their needs and lack storage options, a time of climate crisis where our disposable economy can’t continue, a cost of living crisis where the cost of tools are out of reach of many and a time of growing social isolation. A Tool Library can help on all these accounts.
Tool Libraries offer an extra benefit of providing space for learning, community involvement and social interaction. Most Tool Libraries also offer classes on DIY skills and access to community experts so as to upskill people and facilitate knowledge sharing. Through Tool Libraries we can increase peoples’ independence and confidence in tackling household jobs. We can also build community connectivity.
On June 7th, vote for candidates who understand the scale of the climate and biodiversity crises.
Rabharta want to build a mass movement of workers, carers and people with disabilities, the people who are the agents for change.
Your voice at the centre of decision making.
On June 7th, the people of Limerick City East will go to the polls to elect their local representatives for Limerick City and County Council.
The area is experiencing rapid growth and there is an urgent need for the provision of services to match that growth. As your councillor, I will ensure that this issue is a priority for Council.
My party, Rabharta are an eco-socialist party. We believe that climate action should be in the hands of ordinary people. We founded Rabharta to develop an alternative political programme that puts workers and carers in democratic control of their workplaces, communities and homes. This is the mindset I will bring to Council.
I believe in outward-facing communities. Outward-facing communities play a crucial role in fostering positive change and development. This results in improved social cohesion, accessibility, collaboration, support networks and adaptability. By investing in these communities, we create a more resilient and interconnected society.
Green spaces are vital to every community. Children living near green spaces are stronger, healthier and have higher IQs and better mental and emotional wellbeing. In adults, green spaces have a profoundly positive effect on mental and physical wellbeing. They are also essential to reversing the biodiversity crisis. Green spaces will be a core priority for me if elected.
I am a motorist myself so I understand the challenges associated with keeping a car on the road. Traffic congestion, fuel prices, road traffic accidents are all very real issues for motorists. Active travel infrastructure and better public transport will make life easier for people who need their cars. There is a wealth of evidence to support this. It will also improve air quality, traffic congestion, health and wellbeing. I will strongly support active travel and public transport policies that are evidence based and improve accessibility.
I believe in inclusive, accessible, person-centred communities. If that sounds good to you, please vote Michael O'Brien number 1 on 7th June.
