Why I am an artist
Many years ago my brother who is a professional fantasy artist gave me a set of Oil paints and set me on the path that I am now on. Having always had a love of horses and Medieval history my first paintings were often of knights jousting, this led to several commissions from stuntment who joust in films and shows etc. At the time I was painting alongside working. I also went on to paint wildlife and featured in many of the PAWS finalist shows in the UK. Horses and wildlife still form most of my work today, but I also do floral work and some portraits. Being self taught has been both a curse and a blessing. A curse because finding ways to do things easily has taken a long time, a blessing because taking that long time and making many mistakes along the way has led me to have an open mind when it comes to technique and what will work best for a particular painting.
Over the last 10 years I have had many health problems that have led to me becoming unable to go out to work. Constant pain and arthritic joints after a bad bout of Lymes has meant that I have to find ways to work around my good and bad days. Making it impossible to be able to do a normal 5 day week job as I never know when a bad day will strike. So now I paint full time. I am loving what I do and hope to broaden my subject matter as time allows.
Painting is a constant struggle to improve as any artist will tell you. The joy comes in getting past the difficult bit and coming out on the other side. I love the constant challenge that commissions bring as you often end up painting something you may not have thought of yourself.
Hopefully next year I will get out and meet more people to share my art with. I have invested in a marquee and plan on visiting a few of the local agricultural shows with my art.
