Munster Schools Indoor Athletics - 13th March 2024
The changeable weather did not dampen the spirits of the CBS boys competing in the Munster Schools Indoor Athletics in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and we were all very glad that this event was indoors! We had 10 boys compete in various events; from long jump to 400m. All of the boys did very well in their respective events.

Cathal Lowney and Cormac Cashman (minor) took on the 400m and both boys ran great races. Cormac took second place on the podium with Cathal just out of the medals this time. Well done boys.

Harry Jaworski (minor) took part in both the 60m and the long jump. He took home bronze in the long jump. Well done Harry.

Matthew Mahony (junior) ran very well in the 600m to claim silver. An excellent effort. Well done Matt.

Wojceich Fraczek (inter) ran a superb 60m and his efforts were enough to take home the silver medal. Well done Wojceich.

Alex Jaworski (inter) took home bronze in the long jump with a fantastic series of jumps. Well done Alex.

The Junior Boys 4 x 200m relay gave an excellent performance and came home with the bronze medal. Well done to Jahbeni Kebana Boseni, Matt Mahony, Thomas Hennessy, and Harry Jaworski.

Finally, well done to Oscar Smiddy and Samuel Hayes on their performances. Both boys did very well unfortunately this time their efforts were just not enough to medal.

Comhghairdeachas libh on a fantastic effort. Thanks to Diarmuid and Eric who helped out on the day.

Midleton CBS 19- 13 Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai

The Mungret Cup team progressed to the semi final of the competition with a win over Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai this week. CBS had a slow start to the game going 6-0 down after conceding penalties in their own half. Their quality then shone through scoring 3 tries in quick succession. Cian Ahern allowed Eoghan Devaney to punch a hole in the defence with a delayed pass around the halfway line. Devaney was pulled down just short of the line and offloaded the ball to the supporting Lui Phipps to touch down for the first try before converting it himself.

Dara Dempsey made a line break immediately from the kickoff before setting Devaney running deep into the Bantry 22 once again. Some good carries from the pack resulted in a penalty to CBS which Cian Ahern kicked to the corner. A clever line out play put Dara Dempsey over for the 2nd of the game.

CBS controlled the play for the rest of the half with further dents put in the Bantry defence by Karol Babiarz, Tiernan O Connel and Cian O’Keefe. A half break from Joe Connelly allowed David Crotty to capitalise on quick ball from the ruck as he dived over for a third CBS try. This was converted by Lui Phipps.

Several players were brought on in the 2nd half who made positive impacts in the game. Great carries by Joel Joesph, Sean Lynch and Calum Deegan throughout the half put CBS within touching distance of a fourth try but they could not covert.

The 2nd half remained scoreless unless the final play of the game when the Bantry fullback scored an excellent solo try to make the final score 19-13 to CBS.

Next up is Clonmel away in the Semi Final on the 12th of March. Thanks to the supporters who attended the game the team appreciate it.

NASA Astronaut Steve Swanson Visits Midleton CBS
We were thrilled to welcome NASA Astronaut Steve Swanson to our school last week. Commander Swanson spoke to our 5th year students and students from the neighbouring secondary schools in the town in our hall while the remainder of our school watched via live stream.
Steve shared with our students, staff and invited neighbours his experiences as an astronaut on the International Space Station, his inquisitive nature and life experiences that led him to working in NASA and space. Commander Swanson is a highly accomplished individual with a remarkable career in space exploration. His achievements include space flight experience on the STS – 117 Atlantis and STS – 119 Discovery including 5 space walks. He was also in command of the International Space Station in 2014. Thank you for taking the time to speak with and inspire all those watching.
Astronaut Swanson was welcomed by members of our Student Council and received a guard of honour from our 1st years. Samuel Iskrzycki, 4th year, presented him with an incredible piece of art he created for the event which included aspects of Irish writing and symbolism. Students Rian Casey and Thomas Kearney performed a selection of Irish music for Astronaut Swanson and our guests. Arriving in the school hall two senior cycle members of the Student Council, Karol Babiarz and Cian O’Keeffe introduced Commander Steve and MC’d the event. Well done and thanks to all the students and staff, especially Deputy Principal, Mr. Tom Casey, who made this historic event possible.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to past pupil Jack Enright for making this event happen. Jack’s work as a physicist in Quantum Gravity has led him to working with NASA. For the last two years he has also worked with ISSET, an organisation dedicated to leveraging the wonders of space exploration to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Thanks to Ross Barber of ISSET for his support with this occasion. Prior to this Jack also organised with our staff a Science, Technology, Engineering, (Apprenticeships), and Maths (STE(A)M) night for students in our school. Thank you, Jack, for continuing to share your enthusiasm for STEM with your alma mater.
This event could not have happened without the backing of Dell Technologies and their VP Regional CIO for EMEA & Cork Site Leader, Bob Savage, and Niall Ring, Regional Manager, Central & Eastern Europe, both alumni of the school and Marguerite Coleman, Site Strategist, Business Ops, Dell Technologies. Thank you all.
The presence of Astronaut Steve Swanson served as a source of inspiration and awe, sparking curiosity, and igniting imaginations. His words resonated deeply with both students and staff, reminding us of the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to dream and reach for the stars.
