" For Sale, Rural Ireland "
This will be the harsh reality if steps are not taken now! Family farms being put up for sale, young people being forced to leave due to not being able to afford housing or access facilities.
Join Macra na Feirme as we walk 79kms to Dublin where members will address 8 key issues which are crucial for the survival of rural Ireland.
Sligo Town Macra to walk for Athy to Government Buildings to stand up for Rural Ireland
On April 25th and 26th Macra Members from across Sligo will walk from Athy in County Kildare where Macra was founded in 1944 to the steps of Government Buildings.
The Journey will cover 79Kms, one for every year that Macra has been in existence. Our members will walk through the night to carry as simple message, ‘We want a future in Rural Ireland’.
Sligo Town Macra members will gather with Macra members and rural people from across the country from 6pm April 25th in the centre of Athy. From here our members will embark on the 79Km journey walking through the night taking ‘Steps for our Future’.
The Steps for our future action is organised by Macra Nationally and aims to highlight 8 key issues affecting Rural Youth,
1. Accessing affordable housing and cumbersome housing planning guidelines
2. Disjointed and sparse healthcare services for rural communities
3. The Governments definition of a family farm as ‘average’ and ‘typical’
4. No recognition or engagement by Government on a farming succession scheme
5. Lack of planning for the future of our rural communities informed by rural people
6. Imposition of quotas on young farmers availing of grant aid support
7. Lack of public transport for rural Ireland
8. Proposals to rewet large areas of rural Ireland
Our members are not just coming with problems though we have solutions, and on Wednesday April 26th we will hand in those solutions to Government to address these issues.
Sligo Macra members are very exercised about these issues and ask all rural people to join with us in our days of action.
