The magic moment when a piece of wood shows off it’s hidden beauty for all to see. Every time without fail it always amazes me the fluid colours and storytelling grain patterns the oils show in our pieces. Makes all the effort so worthwhile. These and many more of my pieces will be available at Waterford Crafts Christmas market on in Garter Lane from Friday 25th November.

It was an honour to be asked to create a bespoke award for the WIT Music School
The award ceremony was last week and this award was created in memory of one of their talented musicians Karl Kirby.
Karl had a love of the ocean and in particular surfing so this led me to produce the breaking wave which was sculpted out of a native Beech tree from Durrow in Co.Waterford.
The colours and grain patterns running throughout this timber is both mesmerising and pure.
The wave is mounted on a “double base” which highlights Karl’s chosen instrument ,which I’m told he was gifted at playing. This double base is comprised of a thin dark Ebony wood which both highlights the wave on top and is a nod to ebony woods use in the fingerboard and tail piece of the double bass musical instrument.
The second and most dominant element of the base is the solid Oak lower section. This has amazing grain running through it and is both beautiful and strong.
And finally ,projecting out of the mouth of the breaking wave like a singing voice , I hand cut and set in a Bass Clef musical note. This note being specifically chosen for the double base instrument. This being produced from solid brass as a nod to the brass instruments which are extensively used within the WIT music school.

A copper leaf keepsake box delivered yesterday to another awesome customer.
This is an Ash box cut from a single plank. European Ash splines are added to the corners for support and contrast in colour through endgrain. Inset in the lid is a slice of Irish Oak garnished with a beautiful copper leaf.
