THE "COST" OF SITTING ON YOUR WALLET
In the build up to Christmas if you're heading out shopping remember this simple tip: remove large items such as phones or wallets from your back pocket before sitting down!

As you can see in the graphic, sitting with something in your back pocket puts a lot of strain on your spine and pelvis. The muscles and joints throughout the spine must try to compensate to correct the tilt in the pelvis making it difficult to sit upright. This can cause pain, discomfort and even long term dysfunction such as sciatic nerve irritation if it is a regular occurrence.

If this is a long term habit of yours now might be a good time to try change that!

CELEBRATING 6 MONTHS
Today marks the 6th month anniversary of the opening of Buggy Chiropractic and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the amazing people I have met over the past 6 months. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and look forward to many more!

So, how does chiropractic work?

There are many different theories on how chiropractic treatment (especially spinal manipulation) affects the body so here is how I explain it to my patients:
The movement brings the joints in your spine to the end of their range of motion and a small amount of pressure is put through the joint in this position. This bombards your nervous system, sending loads of signals to the area giving some great results such as:
🟢Better range of motion
🟢Reduced muscle tightness
🟢Improved joint movement
🟢Reduced pain levels
🟢Calm the nervous system
🟢 and many more!

**WHO AM I?**

My name is Éimear Buggy, chiropractor and owner of Buggy Chiropractic. I graduated from the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic in 2020 (during Covid which was eventful!) During my time in Wales I completed a dissertation studying the possible effects of chiropractic treatment in patients with Parkinson's Disease and have a keen interest in everything to do with the body from the brain to the toes!

I spent two years working in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford before pursuing my dream of opening my own clinic in June 2022. I was born and raised here in Slieverue and love working so close to my local community!

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT?
One of the questions I've been asked since opening the clinic is "what is an adjustment?" So, an adjustment or "spinal manipulation therapy" is the technique that chiropractors specialise in and is often what makes a chiropractic treatment different from other treatments you may have tried.

An "adjustment" is performed by putting a very specific movement through a specific joint in a specific direction. This movement can sometimes result in a "cracking" sound.
People often ask if this is the same as cracking their own neck or back? Short answer: NO. The big difference is the word "SPECIFIC" when you are cracking your own joints there is no way of being specific which means you can't get all the lovely benefits from the movement and sometimes can actually be causing more harm than good!

Can spinal manipulation therapy help me? Well, spinal manipulation has been proven to help those with sciatica, low back pain, neck pain and headaches along with a long list of other conditions.

Other professionals that may use spinal manipulation therapy are osteopaths and some physical therapists.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

The origin of the word "chiropractic" translates to "done by hand" which is reflected in the specialised treatment technique you will experience when visiting a chiropractor.

The World Federation of Chiropractic defines chiropractic as "A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation."

In plain English: a chiropractor uses specific techniques to put movement through the joints (a joint is anywhere in the body that two bones meet) of your spine and elsewhere. This movement tells the body to send loads of signals to the area which increases movement within the joint and helps to reduce pain and inflammation.

Chiropractors specialise in issues relating to your spine such as sciatica, low back pain, neck pain and general stiffness. However, as the nerves originating within your spinal cord supply everywhere else in your body (your arms and legs), chiropractors end up being able to treat a wide range of pain disorders affecting the whole body.
