Rethinking Education: Beyond Academic Scores

Educational challenges in school-going children often only come into focus during exam season, reflecting our system’s emphasis on scores. However, success in life isn’t just about academic performance. With the rise of media addiction, the situation has become even more complex. It’s time to rethink our school curriculum to include not just "How to Learn" but also "How to Unlearn."

Our brains are constantly bombarded with information, making it difficult to retain relevant knowledge long-term. Developing strategies to filter out unnecessary information is crucial for effective learning.

If the current environment is challenging for typical students, imagine the hurdles faced by those with special needs or neurodiverse conditions like dyspraxia. Unfortunately, educational training on these issues is minimal, often addressed only at the graduate level, long after early intervention would be most effective.

To help navigate these challenges, "A Way to Learn" offers 51 actionable strategies to enhance learning techniques for students, educators, and lifelong learners. This book covers essential skills like memory enhancement, time management, and effective study methods tailored for today’s fast-paced, digital educational landscape. "Excessive Freedom is Only Slavery." - Socrates

Socrates' wisdom is highly relevant today as we grapple with mobile phone dependency. The freedom to use our devices anytime can lead to digital enslavement, affecting both adults and children.

Children mimic their parents' screen habits, leading to a growing trend of digital addiction in younger generations. The American Academy of Pediatrics and Stanford University studies show excessive screen time impairs social skills and emotional development.

The Importance of Slow-Wave Sleep in Dementia Prevention

According to findings published in JAMA Neurology, insufficient slow-wave sleep significantly increases the risk of dementia with age. For individuals over 60, losing just 1% of this deep sleep annually raises the risk of dementia by 27%.

Slow-wave sleep, a 20-40 minute phase in the 90-minute sleep cycle, is crucial for restorative rest. It slows brain waves and heart rates, lowers blood pressure, strengthens muscles, bones, and the immune system, and prepares the brain to absorb new information.

Research links adequate slow-wave sleep with improved memory performance, particularly in early Alzheimer's cases. Matthew Pase, a neuroscientist from Monash University, explains that slow-wave sleep helps clear metabolic waste, including Alzheimer's-related proteins.

The study tracked 346 participants from the Framington Heart Study over 17 years. Findings showed each percentage point reduction in slow-wave sleep per year corresponded to a 27% increased risk of dementia, and 32% for Alzheimer's specifically.

While further research is needed, prioritizing quality sleep remains crucial for overall health. Explore actionable steps to enhance your slow-wave sleep and well-being.
